    Fur chewing, help please :(

We'ver actually had many, many fur chewers surrendered who have since completely stopped and recovered. Most of the time it is stress and diet related. Surprisingly, the placement of the cage has a lot to do with how stressed out a chin can be. They do not like sudden surprises, so near a...

    oye-when it rains it pours

If you post a picture of your cage set up, that may give us an idea of what the issue may be. If your cages are side by side, there may still be reason to believe that one of the other chins got to him from the other side. Those nose bites are what causes me to consider this possibility.

Probios - alternative to Bene Bac

We've been using Probios for quite some time now. Whenever we have a chin who is new, stressed, or showing signs of squisy poos, the cookie form with probiotics added are usually a welcome treat. Actually, the extra boost for stressed chins has worked out so well that we carry Probios cookies in...

    Spontaneous mutation?

I found it! I have the pedigree on the mom that goes back 5 generations. It looks like the mother is hiding the TOV after all. Three generations back is listed a "black white" from a mosaic and BV cross. Their offspring is listed as an ebony/white so must be hidden there and the subsequent kit...

    Spontaneous mutation?

I have, what appears to be a black velvet/ebony cross baby. Cricket was born on 8/4/11 and her coloring has only gotten more distinct. The issue is, neither of her parents is a black velvet. Her mother is an extra dark ebony white and father is a Shoot's extra dark standard. Knowing that black...

where do you keep your chins?

We've actually had to move the chins out of the dining room and into the fully converted garage. When we had just a few of our own pets, it was easy to keep them in the middle of all the attention. Now, with an average of over 70 animals at a time (including the rescues) they have their own room.

    Do most of you adopt?

Even though we operate a chinchilla rescue, I understand the impulse of wanting to buy "that one in the pet store that just stole my heart". Each chin has a different personality and many times pet store and breeder raised chins can just reach out, grab your emotions and not let go...

    Our Anniversary :)

November 1st marks the founding of Whimsy's Menagerie & Chinchilla Rescue! We're now in our forth year and going strong. Just this year alone we've found new homes for more than 100 chinchillas. As you can imagine, the chin rescue and supporting store has become a full time job and keeps us...

    White Sapphire

Ok, I finally got some pictures. I'm leaning more toward the male being a carrier. Compared with his sapphire sister, his "grey" coloring is considerably different from her steel blue, regardless of the ears. The more I look at his ears objectively, the more they look grey. These pictures...

    Calling Feisty Ferret Home owners!

Thanks!~ It sounds like your choice of FF cage is perfect for you then. There are really lots of options you can use to make it ideal for the critters too. One more thing that really helps muffle sound of a noisy wheel is to stiffen up the structure of the cage. In that case, attaching L-shaped...

Bad teeth problems... Think putting her down is best... :-(

There has been some interesting research lately that the typical chin diet in captivity in the US is lacking. Overseas information appears to be more advanced in this area. Generally though, the concensus seems to be that because chin teeth are free floating, they need much higher amounts of...

    Need info on clostridium

*nods* Thank you all for your input. The general information is readily available on the web, but what I'm looking for is some first hand experience with any of the strains of clostridium. A full pannel was not done on these chins, so I'm shooting in the dark about which strain it is. I'm...

    ...Smells like beef bullion?

To me, the smell of the scent gland poof, smells like cherios. I've not experienced a beefy smell, but I have noticed certain other smells indicative of other issues. A urinary infection, retained placenta, rectal prolapse, and digestive issues all seem to have unique and notable smells. Maybe...

    White Sapphire

I've been working slowly with a sapphire line and have found it difficult to tell the difference between a white s/c and a white sapphire in new kits. I have one mommy in particular whose pedigree lists her as a white, possible s/c (confirmed now). She gave birth to a sapphire female and white...

dumbest thing your chin has ever done

Our mascot, Titus, will actually through bedding and hay at us when he wants attention! Silly little bugger usually does this when we're passing out treats in the evening.

    Calling Feisty Ferret Home owners!

We've modified several Feisty Ferret cages. The first thing we do is remove the wire bottom and swap it around with the plastic pan so that the wire actually helps support the pan. This adds functionality to the cage and eliminates the potential harm of the wire bottom. Adding a scatter guard...

    What does nose touching mean?

Nose touching is a greeting. It's the way chins use to get each other's scent and determine if they know each other. It's also a very telling aspect of chin behavior. When working out an introduction, the very first nose to nose meeting is incredibly important. It's like the chins are sizing...

    Need info on clostridium

Did you happen to notice a particular odor when your four chins passed? The two that died were fairly young. Between 3-5 years old. The diet was questionable and they had recently been to the vet for a check up prior to the sudden deaths. I'm begining to wonder if it was hospital acquired, or...

    Need info on clostridium

A pet owner contacted me when their chin started showing signs of loose stool. When she said there was mucus involved, I told her she needed vet care, not home remedies. Long story short, the chin died of intussusception . They had a necropsy done where the vet determined it was caused by a...
