hey
I was gone for a couple hours, and I told my beloved mother to leave the fan in my room for my chins but she didn't
now they all suffered heatstrokes but one is really bad
uncontious
still breathing
had a seizure I think, he started wiggling his limbs around.
and once in a while it will flex all it's muscles and wiggle it's whiskers around like a mad man, but no open eyes or signs of contiousness. does this mean brain damage to him and my mum?
he has had a heatstroke before when he was young, the kind where he lost his contiousness when the owner that brought him over brought him over and he was basicaly dead. horrible story on how I almost killed the person same as I almost killed my mum but please
what is going on
is he going to be okay
should I force feed him some sugary drink?
what can I doo
it's 1 am there are no doctors around and this chin is my entire life.
the chin that is pregnant is okay, she is just a little slow, I stuck her bum in water and cooled down her ears
and the other one was a bit worse but she seems to show signs of recovery.
any advice would be great.
thanks

Don't you have a 24hr vet about? Even call up your normal vets and it should redirect to one of the vets.

You need to get him as cool as possible..let me see if I can find anyone online who could help us.

Get tiles, bottles frozen etc..anything too help him...As for getting him to come around again..:/ be right back!

Also this happened because fans don't have the same effect on chins as they do on us humans. They can't sweat.

yeah I'm permanently shifting him from one side to the other so that he doesn't heat up too much
gah
I have bottles freezing, and sme ceramic stuff in the freezer too.
he is kiinda opening his eyes, I hope he will be okay. He is shivering which may mean cramps. ugh.

Freezer. Taken from Greenwood Chinchillas.

The following techniques can be used to help to cool your chinchilla down rapidly - but be warned cooling them down TOO fast can cause shock and further problems! Should your animal need these treatments then always ensure that you do get it to a vet for a check up as soon as possible afterwards.

If your chinchilla is inactive due to the heat and lying down on its side and not moving a lot it is necessary to get it up on its feet and moving about again. Where possible get it to drink, offer an ice cube or piece of frozen fruit.

Move the chin into a small carry cage and place in front of an open freezer, if you have a large chest freezer you may place the animal in the cage down into the freezer for a few minutes.

Chins lose heat through there feet and ears so keep a close eye on your chinchilla at all times when they are like this, DO NOT close the doors on freezers when animals are in them.

I put him on the tericota thing and the girl on a towel with more cold water on it
to mske this easier he is otto the unpregnant is pandora and the other is annie
so. otto's breathing is not so shallow and for a second he managed to put his paws under his head when I put him down
he is contracting his legs about one time a second, and if I pick him up he stops. that is so not right

Right...Can't you get them in a carrier(s) and get them in front of the freezer? Agree on not cooling them down too fast but...

my freezer is above my fridge, plus I'm a little worried about having him that cold because his fur is wet.
he is not phisically warm, his fur is cold and he is on a cold ceramic place fr 1 minute and then a couple off, because I don't think gettig him that cool will make him too happy.
he looks like he is hiccuping though, contracting his lower half of the body. that is what i"m worried about NOT the heat. because he will cool down, but what 's with all the cramps and stuff?

If your room was hot enough to cause heat stroke a fan would not have made a difference. Chinchillas don't sweat, so fans don't cool them down like they do us. It just causes the air in the room to move more. If you have an AC in the room a fan can move around that cool air toward the chinchillas, and in turn cool them down, but on their own fans do nothing.

As for the chins, you need to get them to an emergency vet ASAP. If they are this bad cooling them down is not going to be enough to save them. Bring the chinchilla to the freezer, in the carrier (don't put him inside!, just open the door and use a shelf, or something, to put him in front of the open door), while you are looking for emergency vets in your area who are able to deal with exotics. This way his temperature will at least go down while you look for a vet.

I hate to be a Debby Downer, but this is the reason people should already know of an emergency vet in their area. Research before hand can save your pet's life when you need quick care, even at 2:00 in the morning.

This does not sound good. The actions you describe sound like a rather desperate situation. Can't you get him to a vet? I would cool him down slowly. Do NOT put liquids in the mouth of anything or anybody who is unconscious. They may choke and aspirate. He may need some hydration but he would need subq fluids.

yeah I need a vet I know
but I don't have the money at the moment which makes me want to kill myself
I know it's irresponsable but I have had them for a while now and nothing like this happened and yea I"m a student I have no money at the moment
I shall put him next to the freezer. he shoud be okay I hope, he is making noises now.
he is starting to move a little so it's all going to probably e okay
thouhgh he is still convulsing a bit im starting to think they are just efforts to get up

he can't die.
he just can't
there is no way I'd ever forgive myself.
the others are fine...
it's just my little guy... I've had him the most and he is the most amazing chinchin ever. if it wouldn't be so hot he would have been with me in my hoodie everywhere. he is just amazing. he sings with me
you guy's can't understand the extreme bond we have.
i just want to know why he is cramping. if I find this out I cn fix him. that's all I'm asking.
he is giving these weak cries I can't stand it
and I'm guessing him probably knowing I'm crying is not helping.

You can't fix him, you can only do some things to try to cool him down. Without vet care that is as far as you can go. I am confused by what you mean by cramping. Do you mean seizing? If so, it is from the high temperature his body has been at, and probably still is at.

Unfortunately I am going to have to agree with addictedtochins here. Especially without vet care it may be too late for him. If he does make it through he may have neurological issues from the heat stroke.

I saw your pic of Otto, he is freaking adorable. It says you're in Vancouver BC. You need to get him to a vet NOW, if he is still alive give him a chance, how can you just leave him like that?

I don't have a drop of money but okay I'll figure this out
where is the part of the website with vets? I can't even see it that's how screwed i am

yeah just like I thought
nothing in vancouver
he is crying...
he is actually crying here with me and twitching
he is moving a bit
well not twitching just cramping his leg and falling on his site
trying to get up
I think he has a chance.
if you guys know any doctors, I"m in north vancouver
and I prided myself that i never needed one

Just look in the phone book for the closest E vet you can get too. Call ahead. Have your mom or somebody drive you, you need to focus on Otto.
