On Sept. 17th I noticed a gigantic ball of soft chinchilla poop in my chins cage. His poops were softer and with him sitting in the same spot, he was allowing the soft poops to gather into a large ball. At the same time, I had also noticed an insane increase in his drinking frequency which I believe may contribute to the soft stools.
He has a history of maloclusion after breaking a molar, which is taken care of about every 3-4 months after a teeth trim. He doesn't have any pain and his weight is maintained well this way.
About a week after I noticed the soft stools, he started crumbling his food which indicated need for a teeth trim. I got him in immediately which took care of the crumbling issue, he eats pellets and hay just fine.
2 weeks ago his weight dropped SUDDENLY. I took him to the vet where they tested for parasites and giardia x 2 (negative both times). The vet said his heart rate was slowing down and said to prepare for him to pass and gave Kaolin Pectin three times a day in the meantime.
He has continued to eat really well and I supplement with Critical Care about once daily. His appetite is good, he is in good spirits, he drinks quite a bit still.
Is there a potential this issue is a bacterial infection (maybe from teeth issues)? I'd hate for him to die if it can be treated with an antibiotic. My next step is to add acidophilis to critical care. He eats a lot but he is not maintaining weigh, likely due to diarrhea.
Should I get a second opinion? I trust his vet but hate to give up if this can be treated. Vet thinks antibiotic would make the issue worse but did not confirm infection or not.
