I agree with Claire, he needs subcutaneous fluids. He is not miraculously going to get better on his own.

Ok, I will try and do my best to stay on topic, but now that the main question has been answered.....

Why do you not have AC for a CHINCHILLA????? Why did you not take him to a vet....would your parents not lend it to you?

Ugh, this is really maddening, that 2 chins suffered that fate because YOU were irresponsible....you should find someone else who can better care for them and get them help when they need it.

ETA: I guess this isn't much on topic, but UGH!!!!:banghead:

Yea, I apologize for harping on an off-topic subject, but you really should give your chinchillas to someone who has the money to take care of them. I know how heart wrenching it would be to give them up, since you obviously love them, but I honestly don't think they will survive very long unless you do. What will you do if the pregnant female needs a c-section or other vet care during the pregnancy? Wouldn't you feel better knowing that they are alive with someone who can care for them properly, than if they died with you very soon?

Maybe at least give up the two girls, and keep the boy since that seems to be the one you are most bonded to. That way you are not 1. breeding 2. having to spend so much money on the upkeep of 3 chinchillas. I suggest if you do this that you save the money each month that you save from not having to buy food etc for 2 etc chinchillas and start an emergency fund (and buy AC!) for the boy for WHEN he needs vet care, next.

Also, this makes me incredibly sad as well. I don't know how you could keep them and sleep at night.

I didn't think it would get so warm, ironically I moved to vancouver because it doesn't snow in the winter and doesn't get hot in the summer and well I failed. I had A/C in my old place I just moved, we couldn't take it with us.
and the money thing is just a temporary prob, I have huge lung problems and and emergency came up with me, and I also just got my wisdom teeth taken out so that's where all my money I had saved went. I'm helping him drink with a syringe, since he is contious if I put the water on his lips he licks it off and drinks it.
so basically, this event just caught me at my weakest point. It sucks, specially because I also have school and I'm not supposed to be stressed and stuff due to lung faliure and asthma complications and a whole bunch of happiness. It's just a really really unfortunate time. it sucks.
he is a fighter though, and he is getting better and better

Yeah I don't have money at the moment and it struck right now, but it's not that easy. It happens to be a low point and I'm not going to go into personal details but understand that it's not like I just have them there and am unprepared and don't give a **** about them like you guys make it sound, because that is totally not the case and yeah, it's bad but I'm sure it will pass.
it did catch me off guard a bit but I will sort it out.

Heat stroke is not something that "will pass" it will cause permanent damage. Sorry, I know times are tough, and it always happens when the times are bad, they all pile up. BUT, not taking them to the vet is neglectful and in my opinion abuse.

You need to beg or borrow and have them looked at. They will or could, not will, suffer brain damage and internal damage from not getting the care they needed......

You need to either find someone who can take them or come up with a better action plan. I really hope you are not breeding them. You cant tell when your situation will improve no matter how good of intentions you have. C-sections and operations are not cheap....ask any breeder.

Not to mention what is going to prevent further heat stroke? I dont know about there, but it has not cooled down here. I just don't think it is fair to the animal to say, "sorry guys, you need to suffer because I cant afford it, so you will have a slow painful death"

Robotziz, I understand you are having financial problems BUT your chin needs assessment and treatment from a vet - he NEEDS to see a vet NOW - heat stroke can cause major internal problems and he needs subcutaneous fluids as well as the fluids you are giving him by mouth. He also needs syringe feeding round the clock.
He is NOT ok from your description and the longer you leave him without proper assessment the more damage can be occurring.

The fact that you have no AC, and didn't know any ER vets where you moved in case anything happened especially while you decided to breed, is 100% being unprepared. You should look these things up BEFORE you move incase anything happens during the move.
Putting aside a vet fund is needed when breeding and when owning a chin in general. Its for VET ers not human ERS. I understand if you need it you need it to save your own life but most ER hospitals bill you and don't make you pay at the time unlike vets.
If you have medical issues, schooling, and stress, the last thing you should be doing is breeding chins and apparently the second girl is new so it was a recent hting YOU decided to do. Leaving your boy to just suffer with out vet care is cruel, I don't care how much you love him or what money you have its cruel. At least give him to a rescue to help and explain the situation. Maybe when you get the AC back and funds you can take him back.

"Animal cruelty occurs when someone intentionally . . .deprives an animal of food, water or necessary medical care." "Physical signs [of abuse are] an ongoing injury or illness that isn’t being treated . . .[and] pets [that] are kept outside in inclement weather without access to adequate shelter." The America Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Those are U.S. laws, but I'm fairly sure that Canada has similar ones. You realize that you could be reported/potentially prosecuted for willfully keeping these chinchillas?

There, I have said my piece, I promise not to post on this thread again.

I just read through all of this thread, and believe me, I understand about not having any money. It's hard times. No one is trying to criticize you for that.

However, you HAVE to get this chinnie to the vet. He WILL die if you don't. You can keep telling yourself that he will get better, but if he were going to get better on his own he WOULD be 100% better already. He is NOT ok. He is not GOING TO BE OK. The ONLY CHANCE OF HIM BEING OK IS GETTING HIM MEDICAL CARE NOW. Please take him to the vet. Do whatever you have to do to get the money. That's not his problem, it's yours.

There is no advice anyone on this forum can give you that can replace a vet visit, no matter who it is.

I'm really sorry, I know I said I wasn't going to post about this again, but this can't go on. I am a new chinchilla owner, but I have owned animals as pets for as long as I can remember, and I KNOW that this is not right.

I know a couple of good lawyers in my area as well as a number of law students at Columbia Law School that know A LOT of excellent lawyers in their area.

I'm going to give you an hour to take you chinchillas to a rescue, or take them to a vet, and then I am going to start doing some calling/emailing.

I am also going to ask you to provide documentation that you HAVE given your chinchillas up to a rescue or obtained all necessary medical care for them to one of the administrators on this site.

Again, I'm really sorry, I know that sounds kind of extreme, but I really don't think that this is right and it can't go on.

Think about this too: Any animal who suffers a heatstroke can have PERMANENT brain and/or neurological damage if medical attention is not sought out immediately after the event occurs. Every minute that you're sitting there thinking that your chinchillas are fine because they're looking better, eating, drinking, etc. they are incurring more brain damage that is probably irreversible. Even if your pregnant momma doesn't show any signs of heatstroke, she may be suffering (they are prey animals after all, so they're very good at hiding pain and suffering.) Not only that, her babies are suffering. The vast majority of vets will allow you to do a payment plan to do a visit, and if your chins need surgery, sub-cutaneous fluids, etc. at a hospital they can do it as well. Please, please, please take them to the vet or get them to someone who can help them. This isn't about you or your monetary situation anymore, this is about the lives of your furbabies and their unborn children.

Ok I think there's been enough berating now - the OP has not been online for a considerable period of time now (not surprising really) & threats are pointless.
Please back off - it's all been said time and again.

Agreed. As much as I hate to say it I don't think any amount of threats or pleading is going to have any effect here. Robotzik seems to think that he knows what is best and I don't think that he is going to take the chins to a vet no matter how much we urge him to do so. All we can do right now is cross our fingers and pray that either the chins make a miraculous recovery or that they pass on as quickly and painlessly as possible.
