I know at some claiming shows I've been to the judge will ask if anyone would like to go up there to evaluate with them. People will take turns going up if they want to do this. I've never done this because I don't know what to look for.

But why are chewers removed from the table? It's not contagious. Sure, they won't place well, but I can't imagine that their owners expected them to place well. And if chewers are removed, are other undesireable traits like those with maloccusion or missing toes also removed? In other words, is it chins with traits you don't want in offspring that are removed or is there something specific with fur chewers that disqualifies them from the show table?

Chinchillas are judged on their appearance the day of the show. A Grand Show champion who is in prime at one show may only take 1st place at a show at a later date when he is blowing his coat. A fur-chewing animal is removed because its coat is in no condition to be judged that day. It cannot place - it does not have an even coat to judge. I mention the differences in placings from one show to the next because there was someone who brought a gorgeous **** ebony to one show where he took Reserve Grand Show or Grand Show, I believe. The following show, he was disqualified because he had a chewed spot on his side.

Yes, chinchillas showing signs of malo are also removed from the show. I think 2 years ago, there was one that had slobbers and was removed from the table. A chinchilla that is showing obvious signs of illness would also be removed from the show - and actually, should not have been brought in the first place.

Chins are only judged on their fur. Ears, face, feet, and tail are not judged. A chin can be missing a foot or half a tail or have no ears, and can still win top awards. ETA: An exception to this is if the chin has a screw tail which lays upon the fur and disrupts the fur, causing a fur pattern or causing the fur to lay flat in that area.

I'd do this in a minute if it were offerred. It's one of the best ways to learn.

Just ask the judge before the show if you can watch behind the table. I can't wait until the ECBC show in NC this January - I get to stand behind the table with Ralph :) I'm gonna beg Jim Ritterspach to let me watch with him in Ohio too since I have nothing old enough to show at the moment. I can see him rolling his eyes at me already lol.

People in the audience are asked to come up and help the judge at field days. The field days are much more informal and the audience can ask questions during judging or after the judge has given the placings.

Are you saying I shouldn't expect this at the state show in January?

Sanctioned shows are normally more formal and generally, no, they do not ask the audience to participate. At this show, there will be a sanctioned judge and a judge trainee (who is completing her requirements to become a sanctioned judge) who will evaluate the animals. Questions can be asked afterward, but the audience will not be able to help judge nor ask questions while the judges are deliberating.

Whoo to the pizza! What about ice cream or cake? :D

Oh my goodness! You're bad for suggesting that Tara! Sweets! Maybe we can do a couple pies or cakes? Anyone have suggestions for favorites. Maybe something with chocolate and something without chocolate? Maybe some cheese cake or pumpkin pie and then a chocolate cake? What do you all think?

No. Having said that it also depends on the judge. Many like to talk about the top animals and why they placed, especially if it was a difficult decision.

What do you all think?
I think..... I'm going to try and talk Ronda into stopping by Costco and get some poppyseed muffins. :D

I'll think about the sweets. It's sometimes hard to come up with good desserts and most of us should probably stick with the veggie tray after the holidays. lol.

The difference is you have several hundred to observe and choose from, anyone who brings a full string (40) will have backup animals and many of the smaller breeders will bring along a few to sell.

So there will literally be hundreds of chins for sale to choose from? If a person is interested in examining the chin and the pedigree, can this only be done during the grooming time frame? I'm guessing no one can wander around checking out the animals during the judging, but during grooming, some would be off the tables actually being groomed. I'd like to be able to identify a few animals I might be interested in and then listen to the judges comments before deciding if I want to buy.

Also, will the judges be making their comments loud enough that the audience can hear what they consider that animal's strengths and weaknesses to be? And is there a clerk documenting what is said? Or are the comments entirely oral?

And what is the purpose of the back-up animals? Are they there to be entered is case one has a fur-slip, gets peed on, etc.?

Depending on show size, I'd say roughly 70% of the chins will be for sale - particularly males. Often you have to ask.

Examining the chin can be done before and after the show. For the lineage you'd have to ask the owner. Only the dob, breeder and color are on the show card, and the breeder is hidden.

Correct, nobody can go behind the tables once it starts. There are often chins on the front tables for sale that you can view at any time.

Probably not. My recommendation is to pick your animal after the show, bring it back up to the judges and tell them what you want to do with it. They're happy to go much more in depth and even help you find the ideal mate for it.

Fur slip, peed on, babies born, fungus, chewing, and there are always escapees too. :))

I reeeeally want to go to this show but most of the kits I've been holding back for show are only 5 months old, so I'm not sure if its worth making a trip out of it. Any chance there will be a baby derby? Also, can I bring a couple of new chins I had shipped from Ralph to see how they will place?

If you want to bring the 5 month old kits you're more than welcome to! We won't have a baby derby...we tried that one time at a field day and apparently our branch just doesn't get it and can't do it right, lol. Anyhow, I'm going to be showing some five month old babies as well because that's about all I'll have come show time this year. We love having the participation though. You can definitely show what you have from Ralph as well, you just have to remember to mark them as animals that weren't bred by you. ;)

I know you make products as well. We're renting out the tables for $24 for a full table for the weekend or $12.50 for a half table for the weekend. If you come I'd love to get some tubes!

I'll be bringing tags and you can use them too if you don't mind that it will have my ranch brand on the back. Otherwise, I think Pam usually brings tags with numbers only.

I recommend coming before 9am during the grooming or after the show ends so you can ask questions and learn. After the show you will be able to handle the chins.

I don't see an ending time listed... about how long do the shows last? Can people come in and out once the show starts? I am considering driving down with my daughter in time to catch the last hour or two of the mutation show, and then hanging around to check out the animals.

If you want to experience showing a chin yourself, email Ronda ([email protected]) and she'll send you a list you can pick from. She'll bring the chin and you can groom it and enter it in the show.

If you want to learn how to groom, step right up, we've got fuzzy bodies for you. :D

Thanks, Spoof-- I had no idea that was a possibility! Sounds like a great learning opportunity. Emailed Ronda and let her know I am interested in doing that on Sunday morning. I will be very excited if I'm able to work out the timing so I can attend my first chin show. It will be refreshing to be around fellow chin lovers, since it seems my friends and family think I've gone off the deep end! What can I say? I love my Chelsea!

That's because nobody knows how long it'll last until it's done. You can come and go during the show. You could probably get someone's phone # and call the night before to see how many animals are checked in, that'll give a rough estimate of time but they always go over.

Ronda's computer is down so it may be a few days before she gets back to you. :))

Is there going to be enough animals at the show to make it an offical show?with somavia and addcok not attending????
