Excellent! And don't worry about becoming annoying with updates. We love updates! Especially those of a sick chin or hedgie on the road to recovery.

I couldn't have said it better myself. Do you have supplies to hand feed her just incase she needs it?

Aww, you all are so sweet! Thanks :)

Brittany, No, I don't have the stuff I hear mentioned on here, critical care I believe it's called? I know nothing about hand feeding a chin, so I'm going to make sure that if she hasn't eaten for them yet, that they tell me what to do and where I could get something like that to feed her. I didn't think to ask them when they called if they have allowed her to eat yet. I know us humans haveto wait a while and start on liquids.

I did ask what I would need to do for her when she got home, and all the girl on the phone said was that she would need her antibiotics for about a week. So I will make sure I ask when I pick her up tomorrow.

Did she end up getting xrays? I thought you mentioned somewhere they were doing that. Glad she came out of surgery okay and thinking good thoughts for a speedy recovery!

The vet may sell Critial Care. If not Menagerie on here sells it.

I don't know if they did x-rays, the vet said something about checking her teeth while she was out, but she didn't say if she meant physically examining them or x-rays. I'll have to ask about that, too.

I would suggest having the Critical Care on hand when you pick her up. If she is on antibiotics and after surgery she may go off her feed. If your vet doesn't have it (which she should), call around and ask other vets. Also ask for them to demonstrate how to syringe feed her before you leave.

If they have the apple banana flavor go for that one. There are tons of threads posted on how to administer the oral meds as well A's how to handfeed if that becomes necessary. Sometimes you can make a mash mix and they will eat on their own. And other times they will not. Just keep an eye on her water & food intake as well as size & frequency of poops. I'm sure you can't wait to see your little fuzz butt & I hope Misty makes a full recovery.

Misty is home!!!!! So, so happy our little girl is back with her family.

The vet tech sent us home with critical care, and gave me a lesson in how to prepare it and how to wrap her to give it to her. Luckily I have experience in swaddling babies and forcing antibiotics in them, ha ha! I don't think Misty is going to be nearly as hard, since she seems to like the meds and was eating the critical care on her own.

She is definitely hopping awkwardly, so hope the pain gets better for her soon. Doesn't seem right that we get pain meds after surgery, but these little guys dont get anything.

Thanks again for all the thoughts, prayers, well wishes, and advice. Keep 'em coming!!

I hope Misty feels better soon. I hope the vet gave her some type of pain medication before she was sent home to you. I always ask for a couple doses to bring home with me, anyway.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. I'm not too far away. I have handfed and administered medication to my fair share of chins :))

Thanks Stackie, I appreciate it very much!! I don't know if they gave her pain meds, but I do know that they didn't send me home with any. Should I have asked them to? I wasn't sure if they had any for chins.

The only thing that worries me now is we are going on vacation on the 13th, for 3 nights. I was planning on leaving Misty home alone and having a friend stop by to make sure she doesn't run out of food and water, which she never does in that amount of time, but I would feel better if someone looked at her, made sure the a/c was working fine, etc. Now I'm not sure if she will be okay home by herself. It's still a week and a half away, so what do you think? Will it be safe to leave her alone at that point, if she is eating well by herself? I'm not really sure if any of my friends would be willing to hand feed her while we are gone, if it comes to that. I can't change our vacation dates, since it's the only week my husband could get off from school and work, and I already paid for most of the trip.

Another thing to worry about... arrggghh.

I don't think that would work. It's going to be at least a 7 hour drive to the northern tip of Michigan for us, and travelling with three young kids is hard enough. I'm afraid the trip would be harder on her than staying home.

I guess I will have to wait and see how she is doing in a few days, and make the decision then.

Forgot to answer your question! They didn't do x-rays, but Dr. Lennox said she got a really good look inside of Misty's mouth, and that her teeth looked excellent. So I guess that's one less thing to have to worry about!

You could ask Dr. Lennox if you could board her there or if any of the techs could keep her. I'm pretty sure they board animals.

If all else fails and if you want, Misty could stay here with me and I could hand feed/give meds if needed. :))

Hopefully she is feeling better by then.

If they can't board her for you, Stace is a GREAT option. She's a wonderful chin-mom and has lots of experience with sick/injured chins and handfeeding.

Thank you Stacey, that is so incredibly generous of you!! I'll check with Dr. Lennox first, if necessary, but I know she would be in good hands with you. I very much appreciate the offer!
I ended up having to force feed her 3 times yesterday. Feel so bad doing that to her, but I know it's for her own good. She did eat a little hay that I put infront of her last night, but literally turned her back on the pellets I offered her. I hope she starts eating better soon.

I agree, I think she would be a great choice for Misty!! I would feel bad imposing, but it sure would be a relief to know she was being cared for properly while we are gone!

Oh, go ahead and IMPOSE! She pawned 3 rescues off on me last month. Just kidding, I totally volunteered to foster them ;) Seriously though, I've been to her place, and she really knows what she's doing.

If the vets/techs didn't tell you keep an eye on Misty's droppings. You'll need to feed her enough so that her stomach doesn't go into stasis (stop's moving) that's another painful and dangerous ordeal. She's come this far I'm rooting for her to make a full recovery!!
