Received the new Drs Foster and Smith catalog today, my last.

Page 10: "For an extra-fresh smelling chin, use refreshing Scented Chinchilla Dust, available in two delicious fruit scents." "Please specify: Cool Cucumber Melon or Sun Pipened Rasberry"

Why doesn't this make me want to call 800-443-1160 with an order for the extra-fresh, refreshing and delicious?

It's not just fosters and smith. I've seen petsmart or petco ads with the large plastic death balls and the scented dust. Sadly, it's everywhere

I have seen both at PetCo. I know we love our chins..but do you think they really care if they smell like raspberries or cucumbers? My husband wanted to buy some for Trixie once, and I had to talk him out of it.

i have never bought the scented just because under normal circumstances i find that chins really dont have an odor.
unfortunately my one chin is sick and being handfed and because of that he urinates A LOT and when i say a lot I mean I put paper towels in his cage so their isnt puddles of urine and I need to change the paper towels between 4 & 6 times a day.
and sometimes he steps or sits in it so he is a little stinky..........but i still love him!

I am not a big advocate of fleece, but we do use it some for liners. Maybe it would be of help for your boy?

isn't scented dust really bad for chins?i've only seen vanilla,but i would think even if it didn't make them sick, it would drive them batty with that smell coming off their fur, Kishi doesn't even like it if i wear a different smelling lotion than what she's used to.

It is bad for chinchillas but unfortunatly I have seen someone Advocating that and kaytee food on Yahoo Answers. Saddest thing is they are a breeder and a rescue

Rather than using the word stupid, I would rather see un-educated because we have all made mistakes in chin care at one time or another.

Ticklechin, I was thinking the same thing. I am not one to bash a company because they use something I do not agree with.

I would not advocate using it, however, they may be open to suggestions from someone, who isn't irate or irrational calling them or emailing them and telling them the downsides to promoting that.

I had a lengthy conversation with a company here that had a VET tell them that the balls were fine for chins, so they were not listening to me on any of it. So they may, have gotten bad advice from someone, or simply do not know.

You should also keep in mind, it is a business, it is out to make money, I dont think all the "as seen on tv" products work as they claim either...

Actually I wanted to spare the feelings of maybe a newbie owner that bought it and then learned otherwise here, not nice to call someone stupid because they did not know.

Rickman--i actually do use fleece liners but he urinates SO much that i have been putting the paper towels on top of the fleece. i am moving him to a new cage tonight that is predominatly wood shelves so it should be interesting. maybe he will figure out that crazy litter pan on the bottom!

I tend to blame the companies rather than people buying from them. Yes, people should do their research, but when you see these things put out for specific animals you assume the comapny did their research and the products are safe. It is sad that you can not do this, but I don't blame people for buying things like that. Not at first anyway. We all learned alot of things. I'm sure most people have bought something, only to find out later it wasn't very good.

Companys on the other hand. I'm sorry, do your research. When you are putting out a product you do not stop at the first vet that you find. You talk to many different people.

Just how I look at things.

I agree. I blame the companies not the buyer. New chin owners believe that the company they are buying from knows whats right for the animal, they trust the company and its products just like we all trust the people whom we buy our supplies from.

Exactly Tara! And I've made my fair share of "stupid" when it comes to chins. As of now, I'm only slightly beyond stupid but I'm learning, lol.

I think greedy is a perfect assessment for that company, though. Seriously, I just got a catalog from them on Thursday and besides products I'd never buy or use, I cannot believe some of the prices! Upwards of $60 for a *small* dog bed? I'd rather make her one myself out of fleece. It'll last longer anyway.

I'd be interested too. Maybe the scent is made of all good stuff and is actually beneficial to the chinchilla and it's just us that find it offensive? I am now wondering how they make their scent.
