custom designs!

If it's the Tina I am thinking of, the cupcake house came from Gella at the Fuzz Depot:
www.thefuzzdepot.com
Oh my word, I wish I hadn't read this far, because my mind is contemplating all the amazing themes I could do for my boys and Gella doesn't do custom designs anymore! If only I knew how to sew!

In other news, I'm joining the club on MONDAY! But want to take a little time to get the cage decorated before I post photos.

We just redid our cage. Here it is!

We added a few great items from ali713 and put in the flying saucer. So far everything is a great hit :)

Petunia is on the top and Peaches and Peanut are currently on the bottom.

It's not bad, I think the chin spin is a little noiser (but that's because Petunia runs on it like a crazy person) and the babies just learned how to use the saucer yesterday. But the saucer seems very quiet. Tunie shakes the whole cage when she feels like it :)

We bought our first chin and need a little help! Everything seems to be working out nicely so far. I bought a critter nation 162 online for $180 delivered. I bought a 3mo old chin from a local breeder. "Mr Fluffles" (as my 5 & 7 year olds named him) is quite happy and healthy. But I have lots of questions!!

1) BEDDING/LITTER
first we used kiln dried pine.. but it made a huge mess all over the floor around the cage. we then tried the pine in a corner litter box, which he uses 99.9% of the time for pee only. we then changed to carefresh (paper) bedding... and have only a handfull in the litter box. The floors of the critter nation are the stock plastic ones. Right now there is no bedding anywhere other than in the litter box. IS THERE ANY REASON FOR ME TO PUT BEDDING ALL OVER THE CAGE OR IN HIS HOUSE?

2) IS CAREFRESH (PAPER) BEDDING SAFE
We have been using this product for about a week. Appetite and poop hasnt changed. I have observed him chewing on the bedding a few times. I havent seen any come out in his poop... so I am unsure if he is swallowing or just chewing. IS THIS PRODUCT SAFE?

3) FLEECE
Everyone seems to love those fleece liners. My chin is peeing in the litter box 99% of the time. Other than to protect from chewing my plastic trays.. which I can easily replace with metal.. WHY DO I WANT FLEECE LINERS LIKE EVERYONE ELSE?

4) TUBES
I see lots of tubes on this board. I wanted to make some. IS THE FLEECE ZIPPERED OR GLUED ONTO THE PVC TUBES

5) CHEWING
My chin loves his hay.. and also pellets. He chews on his apple sticks and also compressed hay blocks as a treat. But I havent seen him every try to chew the plastic cage pan liner.. his wood ledges.. his (plastic) igloo house... or his pumice block. SHOULD I BE CONCEARNED THAT HE ISNT CHEWING EHOUGH?

6) WOOD
I would like to make some houses, ledges, etc. I know I cant use plywood. Treated wood. Oak. Cedar. WHAT KIND OF WOOD, SPECIFICALLY, CAN I USE?

7) POOP?
My chin is peeing in the litter box 99% of the time. I see some poop in the litter box, in fact there is a decent pile right where he pees. But there is also poop all over the cage, on the ledges, and in his house daily. CAN A CHIN BE TRAINED TO ALSO POOP IN ONE LOCATION?

8) SPAGNUM MOSS
We have a few silk plants that have moss covering the base. I let the chin run around my house a bit. He has found the moss. IS MOSS TOXIC... OR JUST ON THE PREFERABLY NOT TO EAT LIST?

IS THERE ANY REASON FOR ME TO PUT BEDDING ALL OVER THE CAGE OR IN HIS HOUSE?

No not in my opinion, a lot of people just use fleece liners and change them every few days or so, I've stopped using bedding because it's so hard for me to find stuff that is acceptable near me because I don't go to Walmart or a large company petstore often or have one near me. Others who have more experience may say other wise.

THIS PRODUCT SAFE?
I've heard it can cause blockage, I think it was? Not sure, but I haven't heard too many real high praises on it.

DO I WANT FLEECE LINERS LIKE EVERYONE ELSE?
Less mess, but you have to change them and clean them regularly other wise they get really sticky and icky and just not fun to deal with.

From what I can tell some chins chew A LOT some chins don't chew as much.

HA! Your stuck with the poop. With a high fiber diet they poop A LOT they basically leave little trails. Your going to have to get a shop vac or something if you can't deal with it.

Chinchillas aren't suppose to have fresh fruits or vegetables of any kind that includes most plants, if they can't have fresh plants why would you allow them to have fake ones. So that would be a DO NOT LET CHINCHILLA EAT THIS.

Next time I would suggest posting in new chin owners section instead of randomly (as it seems to me) in a thread. You don't want to make Tunes (Peggy) unhappy, she seems to like things orderly.

ETA: Sorry there seems to be some issues with my internet and stuff got doubled on accident I tried to delete most or all that was doubled. D;

Hi. THANKS SOOO MUCH for your reply.

MOSS
The moss isnt fake. Its the kind of moss that sink plant mfrs use to cover the top of the pot, in lieu of mulch or some other ground cover. Its not like i'm feeding it to my chin.. but i wanted to check into the toxicity of this plant materal

BEDDING
I've decided not to try out the fleece. There are no shortage of places around here to buy bedding... and i hate doing laundry. But as of right now the only place I have bedding is in his litter box area. There is no bedding lets say in his sleeping area. I pulled it all out of there after noticing that he was pushing it all out anyway.. but i felt bad watching him sleep on a bare floor!!

VACUUMING
I am currently using hand broom and pan to gather all the poops. They don't aggravate me too much.. there is no odor. Half my family has allergies and I would hesitate to use a vacuum, even if it had a heppa filter because of concerns over spreading the potential allergens further into the air. HOW OFTEN DO YOU VAC/CLEAN YOUR CAGE?

HOW OFTEN DO YOU VAC/CLEAN YOUR CAGE?

I vacuum when I totally clean out the cage, it's just quicker and easier to get all the poop cleaned up or when there is a major food spill, like when Rex decides that he's going to dig in his bowl. I clean my cage basically every day, but I do a total scrub down at least once a week if not more depending on how messy they are that week.

Hi Mrogge,

I had a lot of the same kind of questions when I joined. I'll try and answer as best as I can. Hopefully people on here can complement my answers with some more insight.

1) Not really. The point of the bedding is to absorb the pee. So you will want something absorbent on the bottom of your cage. Fleece is usually great for this as it is not messy. If you don't have something absorbent you will find yourself with quite a mess/stinky bottom (plus chins are very clean animals and won't like it much either.)

2) Paper is usually OK. But I believe this brand uses recycled newspaper which would contain ink which probably isn't OK for chins in the long run. So I would avoid it if possible.

3) They are low mess and can be reused. I have three sets that I just rotate in and out a couple times a week. The chins LOVE sitting on it and it's super easy to clean and keep fresh. Once you go fleece you never go back, plus it's very easy to sew yourself.

4) Neither it's folded over. There is a how-to on making them on this forum if you want to know how.

5) Nope I wouldn't be concerned. They will chew on what they want when they want. As long as there is safe things for them to chew. I would remove the igloo right away though! We lost our first chin because of this, they were not chewing on the igloo but then overnight she ate a large chunk, which is fatal. So I wouldn't risk it. You can get grate wooden houses or if you are handy with a saw are easy to make.

6) There are a few threads on here about what woods are safe. But basically the rule is no fruit trees, sap trees or chemically treated wood. I used poplar to make the shelves in our cage. It's cheap and readily available at any hardware store.

7) Nope they are just pooping maniacs.

8) I'm not sure, but I would put it on the probably not good to eat list. If you wouldn't want to eat it, it's probably not great for them either.

Hope this info helps,
here is to the chins :)

Quick question for FN142 owners...

Does Amazon ever put this cage on sale? I have been keeping an eye on it for the past month and it has stayed at $204. I am ready to buy, but willing to wait if it does occasionally go on sale.

Thanks

Yes, I believe Amazon did run a sale on it a few months ago. Not sure if it happens very often though. Do you have a PetSmart near you? They will sometimes price match if you find a better price online.

Yeah I have a Petsmart real close, but cant find any good deals online.

I bought my FN off of Amazon, but was an Amazon Prime member so the shipping was free. Really, that totally pays for itself in just that one purchase considering when looking online for a cage shipping was anywhere from $50-$150 and now I feel like I saved a lot of money.

Oh and btw, students with a .edu email address can get a free year of amazon prime (that means 2 day shipping for free)

Just google "amazon student" to find the sign up page

Umm... so this thread is totally inspiring me. I love all the great ideas with set-up and optimizing space. BUT it's made me spend a bunch today to finish out my FN 142.
I finished making my fleece covers, moved my hammock to a spot she likes better, got a chin chimney, made a fleece chin pillow, made a fleece hanging house, ordered two more ledges, hung my tunnels and got them off the ground, and ordered more hanging chews.
My mom and female kit are in the bottom and are also getting the benefits of my spending. They have fleece pan covers, the two-story wood house, a hanging tunnel, and fleece house.

AND just so everyone knows, JoAnne's is having a 50% off sale on fleece. My solid pattern was $4 per yard and my one with designs was only $5 per yard. Check it out!

Rocco moved into his today! He's so excited! But did anyone else have a little hook hanging from one of the wire bottom thingys? Rocco has been trying to chew it and not even pliers have gotten it out... Has anyone had this and how was it removed?

Yeah, that is to hang the ladder to block off access between levels. Mine have never messed with it so I have never tried to remove it, but maybe so wire cutters?
