Re-introducing!

Hi, ive got a female called lilly when i got her she was paired with a charcoal male the same age she was pregnant with his kit and a month later i went back to the shop and he's still there looks depressed on his own, im wondering if i took him home with me, could i just re-introduce them in the cage straight away or do intros for a few weeks?

Read up on breading if you intend to house them together. That or find a reputable vet who can spay or neuter... Best plan of action is to keep them separate.

No, I would not get the male unless you can get him neutered. It's not the best idea to be breeding pet store chins, as you don't know their health background.

I'd suggest just keeping your female separate. Because even if you got the male with no intentions of housing them together they could never be together for playtime and the cages would have to be kept about 6" apart to prevent breeding through the bars. And they only take a second to mate so this is why they could never play together.

i understand that, but they were already paired i just bought the female and a month later went back to the same shop and lillys mate is still there

than she may already be pregnant............usual gestation is 111 days. read up on breeding & pregnancy and be prepared. just in case.

she was pregnant she gave birth about 3 weeks ago but the kit died

She'll get pregnant again most likely very quickly if you reintroduce her to that male or other males.

i no, i want her to have another litter, just i want to know would she accept him back or would she reject him cos shes been without him for a month

Did you read my post? You should not be breeding pet store chinchillas. You do not know their health background. They could have a genetic disposition to fur chewing, malo or any other genetic issue.

I had to put down a chin due to malo, it was very painful to see my chin slowly stop eating due to it's teeth roots growing into it's sinuses. And malo can be genetic. If you don't know if your chins have the genes for this you should not be breeding them. It's not worth it.

yea i did thanks, i was just saying because she was already pregnant with his kit, i was just feeling sorry for her because she seems to miss him, but i fully understand what your saying so maybe its stupid of me to think about breeding them again, maybe if i got him neutered.

Just i dont know about re-introducing after a month apart thats what i wanted to know would she most likely reject him because he's been gone for a month

i know but they come together from there previous owner. They just come into the shop a few hours before i bought lilly, because they said to me they dont like to sell them straight away id have to wait a few days but the manager said its okay if i took her straight away

there is a reason the kit died.........she should not be bred.

also i have a chin with malo and i have spent thousands of dollars on him. not to mention the amount of time handfeeding and taking care of him.

if she has complications during childbirth, the vet bill would be close to $1000 for the c-section, xrays, meds & all that.

BUT to answer your question ............there is NO guarantee that they will get along. I had a mated pair that were together for a year and then suddently one day Oreo bit Snickers and now they are separated.

There have been many members who lost their beloved pets from fighting.....not to mention the countless breeders on here who have lost their chins due to the females fighting over the male or the other way around.

keep the female as a pet IF you must get the male, please get him neutered and then prepare to have 2 cages in the event they fight.

If you think she's lonely why not try and find a baby girl to go with her? There's no reason why she would have to go with a male.

Would she get along with the male? Maybe, maybe not. Sometimes with a change in scenery (ie going to your house) chins act differently and it may make them fight. There's no guarantee that because they were together means that they will get along again.

Just as there's no guarantee that she will get along with another female. Chins are picky, you just never know, there's no guarantee.

And chances are, having been a month, she's getting used to being alone. Chins aren't like humans. They do fine being alone. I have two chins that are alone and they are doing just fine. One of my girls lost her female cagemate two months ago and she's doing just fine. She doesn't have to go in with another chin.

Thank you thats all i wanted to know would she accept him. now i know not to go get him. the kit died because she was not feeding when i took her to vet they said her teats wernt showing and said it could be down to having a cold,

i dont know why it was just sudden after i got her 3 days later she had a kit and a day after the kit died, i didnt even know she was pregnant untill one morning i woke up and there was this little beautiful kit walking after lilly

ive got a black velvet female shes 8 months old she seems to be fine on her own, ive tried to introduce them, lilly seemed to get on with her but there is still a bit of chasing,

Welcome to the board Willclark! I think you have made a great decision to house your two females together. Since its too late We wont get into quaratine issues. Just make sure you watch them when you start to introduce them, and if they fight and fur is flying it would be best not to go any further. And if you have any questions please come here first!

ive only just started introducing, lilly had a cold so i didnt let them go near each other, so shes over that now and looks fantastic she's even starting to jump on me when i open the cage and give me kisses

I recently picked up two male chins that had been together for two years and once they came to live with me the more dominant one started to bully the other and now they are separated. There are no guarantees with these guys and you have to go with their flow. I'd definitely stick to same sex chins though to avoid the whole bebe thing.
