I use Panr show, and was wondering if anyone used the regular green bag formula. I rehomed a chin over the summer and sent food with him but the new family contacted me and let me know they found it in the feed store in a 25lb bag. I am pretty sure they have the green bag because I have not seen the blue in that size around here. I did glance at the nutrional info some time ago and remember there was a difference in the protien levels, being lower in the green bag. Does anyone know if there are any other differences, is this ok to feed a chin? Is the only difference that would matter be the protien level? If so, can you just supplement with alfalfa hay to add more? Or would you all just say not use it at all. I should mention that is a male, not in breeding over 2 years of age. Thanks!

You don't want higher protein. You want lower protein, higher fiber. "Ideally" protein would be 15% in chin food, but most of them are quite a bit higher.

Without a complete list of ingredients, it would be hard to say for sure if it's a good feed.

The green bag is Purina Rabbit Chow.

Thanks for posting the nutrional info! For some reason I was thinking the label said it was much lower in protien than that. My memory isn't very good sometimes, and I have not used that formula myself so am not familiar with it. Does or has anyone here used it in the past?

You should tell the family that they lots of times do not have the SHOW in stock and that they will usually special order it no problem.

If they just have one chin the 50 lb. bag will be overkill. If they have a rabbit rescue in the area though it would be worthwhile to get it.

There are also many of us here who sell it by the lb. If you want to give them my contact info, they can order directly off my site (link is at the bottom of this post). I can fit 12 lbs. in a flat rate box.

I did explain the code date and all that good stuff to them. I will mention donating to them. That's a great idea. I also did give them many options for shipping, as I would have shipped it myself. Better yet, they live not far from my mom so I was going to drop it off to them. I am happy that they did head my advice and not use the "charlie charlie" etc. feed and took the initiative to find what I recommended, I just don't think they know there are 2 kinds of Purina since most of the feed stores around here have the 25lb bags on the shelf and if they carry the 50lb show it is usually in a backroom or outbuilding. I have mine special ordered as they only carry the green one. I was just wondering about the green bag since they already bought it and all. There is a feed store out here that carries Tradition, but last time I looked at the code date it was November of last year, so I don't mention that to anyone. Shipping is so high, I don't mind sending it but most people cringe when I tell them shipping costs. I don't charge any extra for packaging or anything, it is just sky high. Maybe I am doing that wrong? But it seems to cost 2fold what the feed and dust does to ship it! Flat rate is actually higher in some cases. Why can't pet stores just sell good stuff? I have yet to see one around here carry any any of the Mazuri products, just the treat filled feed or the tiny little container, Kaytee I believe that costs $10.49! It's just wrong. But that's another story to get into I guess. Thanks for your help.

Are you sure they didn't find the show formula? Sorry if I missed it because they sell the 25lb bags of the blue bag near me. Maybe that is what they found.

Never mind.....It's the 50lb I was thinking of. Sorry

lol. I just got an email from them, they did find the blue bag! But paid a hefty price for it (more than I pay for 50). It is not in vain though, I was wondering about the green one just the same. Thanks everybody!

If it wasn't in the 50 lb bag it wasn't the show formula. The show formula only comes in 50 lb. bags. If it was a 50 lb. bag and I am misreading that, and they paid more than $20 (I pay $16) they grossly overpaid.

dang it. I thought it only did come in 50, and is why I assumed it was green! and then felt bad for making a false assumption. hmm...I will dig deeper into this mystery and find out. Just really starting to bug me now.

And yes, special ordering is definately an option. I special order myself and am going to start steering more people in that direction along with donating part of the bag since 50lbs is way too much for someone with a chin or two. Very cost effective for a chin family and helpful to the rescues. We are pretty heavy in 4H here also so am sure there are many avenues to explore there.

A note about the "green bag" formula: the ingredients in the regular Purina rabbit chow are exactly the same ingredients as those found in the "PANR" Professional formula. The difference between the two is, of course, the ratios of each ingredient in the feed which give the two types of feed their different protein, fiber, fat, etc. levels. The ingredients in the "chow" formula are also the same as the main ingredients in the show formula, though the show formula also has additional ingredients such as yucca and various cultures. The protein and fiber levels in the chow and show formulas are the same.

Is it a problem to feed the green bag? It's lower in protein...plus! It has the same fiber and fat...good! The only differences seem to be the mineral contents and the sources of fiber.

Essentia, I know I just ordered feed from you, but (eep!) I ordered a bit too late...

This is why I'm asking:
I'm leaving tomorrow for break, and managed to run out of food yesterday. I just switched my boys from Oxbow to PANR and they really like it...little piggies. So, now with feeding 3 chins on what was just Suki's food...I ran out faster than expected. I thought I had enough to last me.

The feed store out here only carries the rabbit chow, and I don't have time to order a big bag of the Show...plus, I already have some in the mail from Essentia!!!

So: Would it be bad for me to get a bag of the rabbit chow and feed that until I get back from fall break and have the Show formula from Essentia? I feel like such a bad chin mommy...
