Dear Sandi and CJ:

Eenie and I are going through the exact same thing down to the inconclusive diagnosis of the vet and their suggestion of CT scan. Right now Eenie is still not eating on his own but he is taking the hand feeding very well. He is very active and would ask to come out to play every time I am near his cage. I've found that letting him out as often as I can has greatly improved the movement of his guts and he no longer has problem with gas in his tummy.
One question I asked the vet was: if we do a CT scan, and found either a fracture of his bone or an abscess, then what can we do? Doctor said maybe surgery, maybe nothing we can do. While I'm still thinking about it, I'm just going to continue feeding him and give him time to recover on his own.
As long as he doesn't give up, I will not give up on him. I've already spent thousands of dollar on this, but no amount of money can compare to a happy chinchilla running and wall surfing. (Chinchilla footsteps on hardwood floor is the best and cutest sound!! >.<)

Best wishes for both of you and please keep us updated. =D

For those of you that have been asking, and thank you again for all the thoughts and prayers, I thought I would just post it here. Angie did get back to me right away and we discussed a few options for CJ. I've been going back and forth with the senior vet at Midwest Exotic Animal Hospital, to discuss Angie's plan. CJ has an appointment for this Saturday to get ALL his molars ground down. I am so hopeful that he will recover from that and starts to eat and drink on his own again. Please keep him in your thoughts. :tissue:

Sandi -
It does look like there is some mild elongation in his molar roots. I have seen much worse, but you should always treat the patient, not the x-ray. I do not see any bone loss at the base of the molar roots either. When there is bone loss, usually the pain is so bad that even filing the teeth down does not stop the symptoms.

I don't want you to give up on him, but I am worried because he did not respond to the treatment that there may be something that we are not seeing on those x-rays.

That is definitely the best place to go if you have a chin near Chicago!! I usually see improvement in clinical signs no later than 1 week after the grinding, so hopefully that will help you judge his improvement. Just talk to the vet and see what happens - I think it is worth one more shot if they agree to try filing all of the molar crowns down to below the gum line. Good luck!

Sandi he has been in my thoughts and prayers through all of this. Hopefully this will do the trick

I've been thinking about you and CJ alot Sandi, especially when I am treating my own Smudgie giving him his handfeedings and massages. I really hope this works for him!

Good Luck Sandi & CJ. Richie has his paws double crossed!!! Maybe this will do the trick. You will never know until you try. I always said that i would do everything I could to make my pets happy & comfortable but when it was time to let them go I would do so with no regrets. Have no regrets Sandi!
Get stocked up on syringes and lifeline and everything you will need to handfeed him as I am sure this procedure will make it a bit difficult for him to eat.
Also, after Richie had his last filing in August it took him several months to start to nibble on pellets. And while I do supplement a little he does nibble on pellets, eat some hay and is finally eats treats. Also one wood that I found he is able to actual gnaw on a bit are the softer willow coins......i get them from PPBN. Let me know if you need anything!

I went through the same things you are going through and after we finally ground down all of Herby's molars and got rid of one that was about to fall out, she did a total turn about and is now the chin she was when I got her. She has started eating again and has put back on all her weight and more and is a very happy chin indeed.
I hope the molar grinding goes well for you and CJ and that everything is great afterwards! Zoe and Herby are both sending good vibes your way!

Sandi, having as well, had to go through loving a chin with root elongation, hang in there sweety. It is hard.

I love ya and you will get through this, and I wish you the best of luck with the treatments and such.
