Before they had this brilliant idea, I paid $27 and some change for 50 pounds of hay. At Foster's and Smith it's now $59.99. So what I used to pay for the hay and shipping, I'm now paying more for the hay alone.

I have always loved Oxbow products, but they are just not going to be on my shopping list once I can no longer get them directly through Oxbow. I'm not real sure where I'm going to find hay, but I'll have to find somewhere.

eek, guess I'll need to check and see if the hay prices for Oxbow are going up through my wholesaler too! If they do... Not sure how many people are going to want to pay more!

ETA: just checked... they haven't gone up yet, so I guess that means I should put in an order in case they do!

Well, as I tell my students, this is a good example of where you can vote with your dollar. I know the economy is tanking, but I feel like Oxbow's move first to not do online orders and then to jack up the prices is taking advantage of the growing pet chinchilla market.

I encourage people to start making the transition off Oxbow to other brands that are just as good if not better, especially when it comes to price. I think if we get the word out that there are more reasonable pellets out there, Oxbow will realize their mistake.

I am making the transition to Manna Pro Sho and I personally think the results are amazing. My chins gobble it up and have put on 5% weight gains in the past three weeks and I havent even finished the pellet transition!

So, even though the topic is discussed elsewhere, I think this would be a good place to recommend other pellet brands and sellers who provide them so we can all VOTE WITH OUR DOLLAR!

I agree. They don't need to be rewarded for this. However, people that aren't knowledgeable may start buying brands like Kaytee to save some money. Mazuri and Oxbow are the only decent brands Petsmart carries.

They probably think that many just hooked to their products, so will be willing to pay more. I was looking for the complete list of nutrients, minerals, vitamins in Oxbow pellets but they list only some.Does anyone know if they have this info? I want to know if their pellets are really worth that price and are they better than Tradition? My chins get 50/50 oxbow, tradition. What I really like about Oxbow is fiber level 18.00% - 23.00%, Tradition is only 16% max. But I also know that chins do fine on Tradition, they can get extra fiber from hays.
I do not like Ca:p ratio in Oxbow 0.75-1.25 : 0.25-? P looks low, but they do not say max. Tradition Ca:p 1.1-1.6 : 0.8 min, love this! Both brands do not say the % of Phosphorus (non-phytate).
Vitamin D looks low in Oxbow too 800IU/KG. Tradition has 1200 IU/LB ( about 2400 IU/KG), Mazuri has 1875 IU/KG.
I sent Oxbow pellets and Tradition pellets to the lab. Can not wait to get the results!

Well I just received an email from my supplier and nothing has changed here with prices. I think I'll do an order just in case prices do raise soon. I have a lot of people that buy those 50lb Timothy hay but I'm not stocking up on those! ha!

My prices may have raised because my feed store gets the items shipped in. They could be making up for the shipping as well? Either way I may be taking in a quad set , and a trio into the rescue in a few days so I probably will have to try Kaytee hay or something else. I hate it, but they are going to go through hay like crazy.

Feed is the least of my expenses with chins, If I could not afford to give them pellets how could I afford vet bills, JMO. Directed towards those with less than 15 chins.

But why would I pay over $50 for a bag of Oxbow if I can pay $15 for a bag of Manna Pro?

Affording isn't an issue for most people, but getting the best deal right now is. I don't blame anybody for b*tching about the increasing price of Oxbow when things are like they are.

Yes, but with lower cost of feeding allows for more to be saved and put towards vet bills. Sorry, but I'm all for saving a bit here and there. I don't think anyone in this thread complained about not being able to afford to feed their chins. But at around $76 for a 50lb bag, that's just outrageous. You can get 50 lb bags of PANR or other similar feeds for around $15-$20. So I find the cost of Oxbow rather outrageous compared to other feed.

While everyone is allowed their opinion, I think that an increase of almost 27% on pellets and 50% on hay or more, basically overnight and not staggered IS a cause for concern, whether you have 1 or tons of chins. I have an emergency fund savings account for pretty much anything that could go wrong in my house, whether its a boiler needing replacing or a sick chin that's what it's there for. Now back to the skyrocketing Oxxbow prices, when I talked to a foster and smith supervisor, they tell me it's due to Oxbow's increases but when I talked to Oxbow, they did say that they have some cost increase, yet their price is still the same if I were to buy it from them but the shipping is just $10 less than the price of the 50 pound bag, go figure.

Wholesale prices on Oxbow items, for me at least, only increased 10-15%. So whatever price increases Dr.s Foster and Smith or feed stores are having are for their own profits. JMHO. ;)

To feed pet chins its not expensive to feed them oxbow, if you have too many chins to afford to feed them that if they like it then maybe some people need to re-think their priorities. And re-think rescuing.

If you read above, they are not saying they can't afford it, they are just saying that there are much cheaper options out there...

We put together 250# orders direct from Oxbow and get a big break on shipping. It still works out to about $50 for 50# of pellets or hay, dividing it evenly. Price of hay is $20.

Our local feed store charges us the same price when they have it (they order twice a year and are trying to tailor their orders to our collective needs).

Why are you deliberately misinterpreting what people say and trying to pick a fight? Nobody here said they couldn't afford to feed their chins. Nobody here said they would starve their chins to death if they refused to pay the ridiculously high price that Oxbow retailers charge now.

However many chins they have and what they choose to feed them is their business not yours. As long as it's a good quality feed, and it can be bought for less than $50.00 a bag, what do you care?

Do you look down your nose at people who shop at Wal-mart, K-Mart or Target because it's more affordable too? Does that mean they should rethink wearing clothes or having kids? A shirt is a shirt. It doesn't have to cost $100.00 to make it wearable. Good quality chinchilla feed doesn't have to cost $50.00 a bag in order for it to be nutritionally sound for your chin.

Yikes.

There are a few good feeds. You don't have to feed Oxbow. Find one of the good feeds at a good price and go for it.

To say that someone shouldn't have animals because they won't pay $50 for a bag of feed is just silly. Actually, IMO, PAYING $50 for a bag of feed is silly.

Hey quick question, is the mazuri in like the 2.5 pound bags at your pet stores like $8? thats outrageous so i just get my mazuri from alli or carise

I buy small bags of Oxbow from Petsmart...I usually never pay attention to the price. I just grab and go. Looks like I should take a look at the price next time I go!

Since I was one of those less than 15 chins person you were directing this too: Feed is the least of my expenses as well, but that's not the topic of this thread, its about how Oxbow has raised their prices dramatically! JMO - maybe you missed that!

Once again! It's NOT about affording to feed them, it's about drastic increases in price from Oxbow. Another thing you don't know me to tell me to re-think anything! Since you don't care what you pay for feed or whatever, then this isn't the thread for you to post in. JMO!
