I'm going to go buy some chinchilla food so when the chinchilla I'm watching does finally start eating on his own (teeth issues, lethargic, whole list of other issues), my friend can slowly switch him over, and since I will have it for him already, he won't have any excuses. What is better though - Oxbow or Mazuri? I feed Oxbow to my guinea pigs and most say its better than the Gpig Mazuri food, but is that the same for the chinchilla food? It seems that a lot of people feed Mazuri here. Any advice on which to get?

Right now he is on Nutriphase crap. I went through and picked out all the junk one by one. I filled up about 1/4 of the 3lb bag with just junk - strange treat pieces, dried bananas, raisins, and other fruit, sunflower seeds, peanuts, and other strange pink seeds. I left in the pellets and oats - as they were too difficult to remove and aren't that bad. But let me tell you, in each small handful I scooped out to pick through I found about 2-5 raisins every time. I can't believe it. No wonder the poor chinchillas teeth are rotting away, not only was my friend giving him tons of raisins all the time, but he was getting tons in his food, as well. I'm so... ahh!

So anyways, sorry about my rant, but if anyone could tell me which of those two foods are good, I would be greatly appreciative! :) Thank you in advance.

I have used Mazuri in the past but have been feeding Oxbow for the last 4 years and love it.

My personal opinion is Oxbow over Mazuri. Not a Mazuri fan.

Mazuri never sat well with Hemi and Scoot. They got diahhrea on it, so if I had to choose it would be Oxbow.

I've fed Mazuri with no issues, but it seems that some chins do have issues with Mazuri, so if you can get the Oxbow and don't mind paying extra to get it as I think sometimes it is more expensive than Mazuri, then I would go with the Oxbow. Of course there are other feeds that are acceptable as well, but maybe if you are ordering your guinea pig Oxbow food, you could get the chin food at the same time which would be easiest I'm sure.

I used Mazuri and never had any issues. I recently within the last couple of months, switched over to Oxbow simply because the store stopped carrying Mazuri. I don't have any issues with Oxbow either. I think they are both good brands, but I would go with the suggestions of the pro, which seems to be Oxbow.

Have used both but in my case only, I have seen less waste of pellets with the Oxbow, which they are currently on.

I basically kind of just asked a question about Mazuri myself and I've been using it for about three years, and although I've never seen diarreah with it in my chins, I have decided myself to start using another food for other reasons. I'm finding out, even that many people have a difference in opinion and their chins are differant on that food, but my chins poohs are really really dark, so I was told that means too much protein so that is why I am switching.

thanks i think im gonna go with the oxbow. i can get a 10lb bag at my local farm store for the same price as the 5lb bag at petsmart. lol.

Oxbow is the best, but pricier. Make sure that your friend is willing to pay for it in the future. Otherwise, Walter will end up with crappy food again. A lot of people here are using Purina Advance Nutrition Formula for rabbits. That is quite inexpensive compared to Oxbow or Mazuri. Personally I am using Mazuri with no problems, but mixing Purina ANF in for the acidophillus.

Also important, there has to be a slow food transition.

Oxbow... I naively had my boys on some crap food, then switched them to Oxbow, and the grew A LOT super fast. It was amazing what a good diet can do. Never tried Mazuri, but I know (for me at least) that Oxbow is much more readily available. Although I did see Mazuri at the Petsmart the last time I went...

Sesame's on Mazuri and she's never had any problems. Both are good feeds, just pick whichever is more accessible to you and more economical for you.

I am not sure what food my future chin is eating, but I am going to gradually switch him to Oxbow. I have read great things about this food. I had been feeding my rabbit some other pellets and stumbled upon Oxbow...now he is more active and happy ever since I changed his food. I am also going to get Oxbow Timothy Hay for both the chin and bunny too :)
