I guess you'll believe us when you come back requesting help with unexpected kits. Since you're not willing to take the advice of people who have decades of experience with breeding and pet chinchilla ownership, I sincerely hope you'll take the time to read the Breeding FAQs. You're gonna need it if you keep a male and a female together.

for gods sake what do you expect some say male some say female and previous owner says male your opinion is from a photo im not just gonna seperate just cos you think hes a she yes i will read your opinion and take this on board but there is no need for snottyness of you

I'm not being snotty. I'm being sincere, as I'm genuinely concerned for the well being of your chinchillas. What I expect is for you to open your eyes and look at the links that were posted previously. I have 2 males and 2 females. There is no mistaking or denying that there is a gap, full of hair, between the penis and the anus of the males. Sexing chinchillas is incredibly easy to do. Either there is or isn't a gap.

If you want tactile proof, try to do a hair ring check on "him". If there isn't a sheath to roll down, revealing the head of a penis to gently pull out, you have a female.

Here's Ticklechin's video demonstrating the process: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUfmBoighpA

i 1000% agree with all that was previously posted. please start reading the breeding section, so you are at least prepared. and please go thorugh the horror stories. that may very well change your mind about keeping the two together.

now that being said. since the previous owner clearly had no idea one was a female, you might want to post some photos of your other chinchillas genitalia ... if they both happen to have been wrongly sexed and are both female, well then good news you can keep them together.
if not well, they need to be seperated contray to what you might 'feel' about how sad they will be to be alone. chins are actulay fine on thier own.

Thanks for your genuine concern but there is no need to be I think im more than capable of looking after 2 chinchillas even if one turns out to be a girl (and after reading peoples comments some are saying yes some saying no and ive asked experienced people who are not just on this site probably a lot more experienced than you and if he is a she they have been together a while now so the deed might of already been done and i will cross that bridge when it comes to it I have a exotic vet local 5 mins away if there is any problems and i'll be happy to keep any babies but thanks anyway for your concern.:wink2:

Did you try to do a hair ring check? Do you know the backgrounds of both of your chinchillas? Have you read the Breeding FAQs so that you fully understand the risk you're taking? Do you realize that if she's pregnant, you'll still have to separate her from the male to prevent breedback? There's a lot more to having kits than slapping two chins together and praying for the best. They're exotic animals. There's a level of responsibility to that which I think you're grossly underestimating, particularly since you can't even sex your own chins when people provide you with the resources to do so.

Yes i no if lugsy is pregnant i HAVE to seperate and get chico neutered ive already consulted a exotic vet just in case. please dont get yourself excited :wink2: SEXING A CHINCHILLA IS VERY DIFFICULT ESPECIALLY WHEN YOUNG mm! this is a sentence ffrom a very experienced author Mirella Poli. :clap1:

I apologize if I'm coming across as harsh, but you came on here asking for advice, which people gave you and you're choosing to ignore. I bred once for the experience and I researched it extensively before doing so. I don't claim to have a fraction of the knowledge of most of the senior members on this forum. What I do know is that I have never received bad advice from the people on here and my chins wouldn't be alive today if it wasn't for their willingness to help me and point out where I was wrong.

When you receive resources, you read them and you form your own conclusions. You have videos and pictures proving that your chin is in fact a female. If the other one is a male, you're right, there is definitely a chance that she's already pregnant. You'll need to surround the cage with hardware cloth so that the kits can't escape. You'll need to remove all ledges and wheels from their environment. You'll need to separate the male so that she doesn't get pregnant while she's nursing because it's too taxing on their bodies. You'll need at least 3 extra cages because the male kits need to be separated from the mom at 8 weeks old otherwise they can impregnate her. If there are complications during labor, you'll need to know how to identify the signs of distress and what to do. If she can't nurse, you'll need to know how to handfeed and what formula to use. I handfed every 2 hours around the clock for 3 months because one of mine couldn't latch on. All of that information is available here in the breeding FAQs.

Hmm...... sexing chinchillas even when young isn't actually that difficult. An author may think it is difficult but experienced chinchilla breeders don't. Breeders can accurately sex a chin which is newly born. ;)
I'm afraid that most commercial chinchilla books contain inaccuracies or are sadly out of date.

Kay, I realise that you have had conflicting advice on the sex of your chin but the photo you have provided clearly shows a vaginal 'slit' as well as the urethral cone being close to the anus. Your chinchilla is female and should be separated from the male now, regardless of whether she is pregnant or not. It is also worth getting everything prepped for kits (kit-safe cage etc).

Whereabouts in the UK are you based?

It is common for people to sex chins wrong when they don't have a lot of experience with chins. I constantly get chins in the rescue that I have been told are one sex but turn out to be the other. Your chin is a female for sure. Maybe your other one is female as well.

I did not say anywhere that ive been given bad advice I put photos up on different forums to get a bigger picture of opinion if i new i would of upsett anyone i wouldnt of bothered, saying that im glad i did because there is only you being rude and taken this to another level your either very young or very sad. It doesnt take einstein to no you need a spare cage well guess what i have 2 they are old so i might just go an order another one would that be ok with you  I asked an opinion sexing my chin and got one never asked whether i should separate,I would be happier if bothe were boys but its not the end of the world, people can tell me to seperate but if i dont want to im a big girl I will do what i think is best and if i think i can cope with kits then thats my business certainly not yours.:)

Thanks to everyone else who has taken the time to reply I really do apreciate it but its getting silly now so bye im off to play with my gorgeous chins possibly male and female but hey im happy and they certainly seem to be since the last owner couldnt even get them out of the cage. kayx

BTW did you discover what the "runny brown sticky stuff" was?

Can you believe it no I got no advice on what i actually asked about even with all this experience, but that just about sums it up really, there is always one thats more interested in given you abuse but you cant really tie everyone else with the same brush you do get pushy people everywhere im afraid. :wave3:

Kay, nobody has given you abuse on this thread. What you have had is advice. However, I will let the Admins deal with that side of things ......

I strongly suspect that part of the reason Susan (AZ Chins) asked whether the chin with the brown sticky discharge was female is because pyometra can show as a brown fluid and so can a miscarriage.
If you have a male and female together and the female suffers a miscarriage then she can retain the foetus - brown sticky fluid from the vaginal area can be an indicator of this (one possibility anyway).

Do you know if the fluid was from her vagina or from her anus?

May I ask when you actually took the photos of the female's genital area?

Since this thread seems to be pretty much useless, and since the OP is going to do what she's going to do, I see no purpose in allowing name calling and tantrums to continue. If you believe you have a male, good for you, but you've got a female. If your "breader" believes it's a male, good for him too, but he's wrong. You have a female. Let's hope they aren't brother and sister too - that's always a happy coincidence with people who have no clue what they are talking about.
