This happened to me too. I was told by the breeder that they were both male and that they were brothers. A little over a week ago, one of my chins gave birth to 3 kits which means they were inbreed. If I had known this I would have gotten the male neutered. One of the kits didn't make it. I don't know if this was a result of inbreeding, but either way it was extremely sad ='(

I feel your pain....except mine were supposed to be sisters. Now it's just waiting to see if Sappho produces any kits....:hug4:

The same thing happened to me. I used to have 2 girls, Baby and Chinchi. Unfortunately, one day Chinchi died leaving Baby alone. I ended up adopting to more Chinchillas from a nice man who couldnt pay enough attention to them. I had set up an ad for a girl chinchilla and the man had assured me that the 2 were sisters and could not be seperated. When I got home i sexed the new chinchillas and found out they were actually brothers. Luckily they gave me their supplies so i had an extra cage to seperate them.

Actually, when a new crops up, the breeder often has to use inbreeding to get enough chinchillas of that color or that are carriers of the color in order to make more of them. This is something that should only be practiced by someone who is extremely knowledgeable in chinchilla genetics since it can also cause inherited deformities to show their ugly heads.

Actually, inbreeding is breeding brother to sister. LINE BREEDING is when breeders breed father to daughter or mother to son. This is acceptable but you need to research and know what you are doing before you do this. It is used to help set in a specific feature or characteristic of the animals into a line. You have to remember that this also sets in the good as well as the bad. First generation only. Offspring from this type of breeding are bred out to a completely different line.

Black velvets were created by line breeding as well as those curly haired and long furred chinchillas that Jim Ritterspach is breeding.

I don't know of ANY responsible breeder who will breed brother or sister together.

No problem.

It is also very easy to not sex babies correctly when born. Sometimes even when they are older. There is always that mistake I made when I first started out. I didn't know why my females were not producing. I finally found out that I had collared the male. Yea, that's right - go ahead and laugh at me. Hard to produce when your chins don't have the right equipment!

Another funny for you guys - I purchased part of Carole Kessler's herd and they were quarantined at dad's place. He took care of them during the week making sure they had water and food and he became attached to one checked male - which he INSISTED on calling she... Patches was on the top row. Dad called me all excited saying, "Patches has had babies. I peeked over the top of the tray and saw her having babies. I didn't want to disturb her so I left her alone, but after I went back a couple hours later I couldn't find any babies. I pulled the tray, checked to see if she had gotten in the dust bath somehow, and couldn't find any babies there or behind the drawer. The run is blocked so they couldn't get up there either!!! I don't know what happened to the babies!"

Yes, I just let him go on while I was trying to hold in my laughter. Finally I asked him, "Dad, don't you remember I told you Patches was a male?" LOL - he was so upset and he wanted to see those babies so badly... I'll never let him live it down. Well I'm sure you all know that Patches was servicing himself and dad expected babies!!! I called and told Carole and she got a big laugh out of it too! Oh, what funny creatures these chins are!
