I just recieved my chinchilla today but the cage floor is metal and I am so concerned for my chinchilla's feet. I don't have safe wood to put on the floor at the moment.

Please help. I am so worried. Is there any kind of material or something that I can place on the bottom for now that is safe? Even if it's a towel or an old shirt of mine or something, I don't have polar bear fleece either Ugh.

I'm sorry. It's late here and I can't run out to get anything for him right now.

Have u got any ledges or something so he or she can rest her feet on for the time being?
It's not really an emergency, some chins live their lives on a wired bottom, as long as they have places to rest their feet, it's ok.
It won't really hurt them for a night or 2 unless, the wired spacings are too wide and they get their feet caught in it or something.

Ceramic or granite tiles, seagrass mats, pieces of KD pine, polar fleece... you have several choices of things you can get to either cover the whole bottom or just parts of it.
Tami lived in a wire bottom cage for about a year and a half. I just had some ceramic tiles down on most of the bottom and she was fine with that.

The wire isn't bad, just keep it clean. Put in a few little ledges and maybe a tile or two. I use wire bottom cages with all my chins, safe wire spacing for floors is no larger than 1/2"x1/2". They have shelves and tiles in each cage, not just to rest their feet but to make the chins feel a little more at home since they like to balance on things even if they get just a few millimeters higher in the air.

Thank you for your answers. :)

I do have ledges, and the wire spacing is small. I am relieved. I still plan on maybe putting down some safe wood down on the floor just in case. I would put fleece but he was to eat everything and gets especially agressive with any kind of fabric. He tried to eat the shirt off my body! xD

Thanks again!
