For now, here's the GSC.

Wow. All I can say is wow. She is 3 months old and already over 1000 grams???

ETA: nevermind... just looked at the birth date again. I thought breeders usually only showed younger chins?

Lynn, Empress does a 2 day show because they won't put mutations up against standards. That's not how it works in MCBA. They want ALL animals to be compared to standards, and really, isn't that how it should be? Since the standard is the backbone of any chinchilla breeding herd?

Wow.......I thought the industry was moving past this they and us mentality.

Oh and btw, Empress can do a standard and a Mutation show all in the same day. So no, that is not why it’s a two day system. It just simply has remained that way(a two day system) because Empress used to have an astronomical amount of entries at the national show and prior to 1992 Empress classified all entries. I.e. the 1991 Empress National that had 900 standards that all had to be classified and judged.

And to further invalidate your point, if standards were the backbone of any herd (I agree with you there) why don't you incentivize the raising of standards by offering them their own show rather than putting them at even keel with sapphires? And also I'm just curious, if you were really sympathetic to quality standard production why does the classified system segregate based on color phase rather than quality alone?

BTW I love Empress and MCBA alike, I just prefer a show system that doesn’t praise mediocrity

I apologized if I may have glossed over this somewhere in this thread but how many standards were shown at MCBA Nationals and how many ranchers showed full standard strings?

Be careful Dan, you're gonna get this thread moved to the chin debate section. Lol! For those of you that don't know the show classification method used by MCBA was formally used by Empress. Quite a few years ago the Empress Board of Directors voted to implement a new 10 class standard show system. There were members of the board and some regular Empress members that were against this change and initially believed it created an unfair advantage for some breeders (ie Shoots) so, they decided to break away from Empress and form their own organization MCBA keeping the show system the way they were used to. Fortunetly for everyone, the 2 organizations allowed people to join and be a part of both if they so choosed. I personally like the differences of each organization. Rarely do you have the same animal win both Nationals and if it does it is completely deserving going through 2 different types of shows with different judges. If MCBA were just like Empress and used the same show system and format it would just be a replay of the same show with most generally the same results. I think it's much more of a challenge to win both Nationals under the current differing systems. Ron Hummel may of had the GSC of both shows this year but, it wasn't the same animal that won, that would be very difficult to achieve with the 2 different systems used. Also, a specialty breeder can choose and be a part of either organization and show system that suits their type of breeding goals better. Options are always good. I don't think 2 standardized carbon copy organizations would be interesting to anyone.

my pics

I was a wreck the whole show and forgot to take pictures until the end. I got a few pics of my entries and then my camera died.

I don't care either way how any organization runs their shows, frankly; but people constantly go on and on and on about how standards are the most important animal to have in a herd. Would it not make sense then to have standards compared to the mutations instead of having them completely separate as Empress does?

BTW, in order for me to have an "us versus them" mentality, I'd have to care enough to work up some ire. You mistakenly think I care, when I don't. It was an observation, not a criticism.

oh my gawd..your chins are gorgeous! I always look at your chocolates on your website and drool. Don't you have one you want to send to York for sale? lol

Brittany - The judges had it worse than I did, at least I got to sit a bit while they were deliberating. However, my voice was starting to crack. =p

Sumiko - If by full string, you mean 20 animals, only 3: Baar, Hummel, and Ryerson. However, Jay Firebaugh won the Standard Breeder Award with 19 standards.

Mark (and Dan) - had Ron been able to stay Sunday and show that black, he may have gotten GSC at both. But two days shows are tough for some people to attend - actually Empress Nationals is pretty much a three day show since you HAVE to be registered Friday night. For those of us at the ends of the country, that's at least 5 days used up to make it.

Even though it was a 12 hour show, I like that it was over in one day. The chins don't have to be stressed out in carriers any extra days and I don't get too far behind in chores/work.

I will definitely be getting a hotel room next year so I can stay for the entire show. I left just after dinner and it was a long drive home.

Thanks Mish! :)

Jay Firebaugh - that's a name I don't recognize. What is his ranch name and where is he located? Winning with one fewer than a full string against Hummel - very nice. Hummel had some very nice standards at the Empress National this year.

Do you happen to know the breeder award points?

Meg check with Tiffany and Mish on your fleece tunnels as we found them while cleaning up and put everything with their stuff assuming it was one of theirs.

His ranch brand is JAY. I think he's in Ohio, but I'm not 100% sure - he was wearing an Ohio Buckeyes shirt, lol. I ended up bringing 2 of his animals home - they're all so very nice.

I didn't see any fleece? Were they on the side table beside my pans and feeders? I didn't pay any attention to it, but I remember a bag sitting beside the pans.

Congrats to all the winners! Sorry I didn't make it out this year.. I had all intentions of doing the trip--but life got in the way. Hopefully by next year things will be calmed down and I'll make it out there again!

He and his family were sitting right behind us. His young grand daughter was reading cage numbers to him, she seemed to be very enthusiastic. It was cute.

Jay had some really nice animals. I'm not sure if he's just getting into showing or what because I don't recall hearing of him before either, but he's definitely someone to watch out for! His animals did great!

I'm definitely glad I didn't make it into a one day thing like I was planning on..I"m glad Sandi talked me into staying! I will definitely stay next year, too! I already have the date marked on my calendar.
