Which are sweeter? Which are the best to have as a first chin

Males do not spray and females do. That's the only difference I've found. I have both males and females. Most of my chins are very, very sweet chins. I have a couple who are sassy in the cage but once out are very sweet. I don't think it really matters one way or the other

I only have a female so I have to vote for the ladies. I've been very lucky with her. In a week she was fully adjusted and giving kisses. By the end of the first month I had her trained to run back to her cage for sleepy time. She has never sprayed me. However she refuses to become litter trained. My next chin will be a girl. I also live with two boys. So my rule is all pets must be female. It's not fair being the only girl in the house.

I have 100+/- chinchillas here and have to say I love both my males and females dearly but I find males to be less tempermental. The males also seem more interested in interacting with me and my husband than the girls
For some reason, my girls love me and are so gentle to me... my males (though over time are getting a bit less skiddish) just don't like me very much and when they see me coming, they go running LOL. Maybe a few years from now they will love me just as much. *shrugs* or maybe they are just playing hard to get... hmmmm

I would say go to a breeder or rescue and look around. The best first chin is the one with a good temperment that you bond with, be it male or female. Don't choose solely based on ***, color, markings, or "beauty"...

Each animal here has a very sweet personality. I have no biters and one who sprays me once in a while. Rolls eyes.
Some like a scratch, others like to nose smooch, almost all like a kissy smooch, one allows me to touch her foot and nothing else. One likes the top of his body scratched like a dog. Some I will allow them to explore my face and others are not old enough to have learned manners yet for face grooming. And NONE of mine sit still out of the cage. How I long for the chin who will sit in my lap and watch tv with me. :hilarious:

pfft.........i have a male that sprays! little stinker!
i have all boys and i love them dearly. but i have also petsat girls and they were equally sweet.
i think it all depends on the chin and you and your home environment, etc.....

Totally agree, one of my males sprayed his cagemate in the beginning. I didnt think they would get along at all but with supervised playtime they worked out great. My female sprays me though. If I wake her up too early she will spray without a warning really, otherwise she is so sweet. None of my males have ever sprayed me, just eachother.
Im my experience males are more ready to interact with you, and it takes females more time to warm up.
I see no difference. I have girls that will cuddle and boys that will cuddle, girls that want nothing to do with me and boys that don't either.

My rescue girls seem to be very very vocal and feisty but they lose some of that after adjusting to living with me. After they mellow out I would say boys and girls are the same.

I have all boys and love them all very much. They are all sweet, but like Michelle said, one of my boys sprays as well bahha. He never has sprayed me though, only other boys. Still, as much as I would like to vote for boys I'd say you have to figure out which is best for you. There's not much of a difference since each chin is so individual when it comes to personality. You have to find a chin that bonds to you personally and whatever gender, color, whatever that chin is... is what works for you.

I agree about just going and meeting the chinchillas at the rescue or breeder. There may be one you wouldn't usually consider but you just click with. This is what happened when we met Edgar. We wanted a boy who was standard or mosaic and at the very least a white belly and ended coming home with a dark ebony. I've never regretted this choice because Edgar is the best and I can't imagine not having him.
Also the reason we got a boy was the possibility of spraying being less and not chances of pregnancy. The trade off is having to be on the look out for hair rings.

I've had my two girls for about 3 years now and I've only ever been sprayed once, and that was when my chins were still new and scared. Now they seem to feel that kacking is sufficient to get their point across.
I agree with what others say, about picking a chin based on its temperament and not on its ***, color, etc. I've known very nice chins of both sexes, and not-so-nice chins of both sexes, too.

I'm going with the majority here - the thing to concentrate on is more picking on temperment than picking male or female or a certain color. That said, I've never had a male that was downright mean, versus I've had several females that give a new meaning to some choice words. But then, I've had other females that are sweet as cupcakes, requiring no time to warm up to you or anything. It just depends on the individual chin. AND on the person - I refer to my mom's chinchilla, Jinx, as "the devil chin" - she loooooooooves my mom but hates me and bites/sprays me every chance she gets. But she loves my mom....

After owning chins for approx 15 years I can tell you there is no difference. Sometimes their personality is from genetics...a lot of time it is how they are handled from birth. I have a chinchilla from a breeder that was obviously only handled twice in her life. 1)to be sexed at birth 2)to be put in her carrier to come to my house. I have to be careful opening her cage door as she may come flying out. She is a total spaz but slowly...very slowly...she is coming around. Hobby breeders pick up your babies at least once a day if you can! It makes life so much easier for the new owners.
