It was actually the 2nd vet that told me all that stuff. But yah...he TOTALLY sucked.

What makes everyone think the 2nd vet was wrong?

The truth is, no-one knows whether there is underlying bony damage to that foot & she is still being left without proper investigation (x-ray) to confirm/deny that there is more going on than just a wound.

The second vet, for example, may well be correct:
He could have called the scabbing "necrotic" tissue (which is correct since necrosis means "dead" & that is what a scab is essentially).
The nerve damage - if she does not react when pinched on her toes then that is also a possibility.

X-rays check for more than just a break - a splinter of bone, a foreign body (although not all show on x-ray), bony infection (osteomyelitis) etc. Unless this last vet has x-ray vision he can't possibly comment on all of those issues.

That aside, I really hope Jade continues to heal & that she stops self mutilating when the Elizabethan collar comes off ............

I have to agree completely with Claire - only x-rays would tell the full truth. I hope also that Jade continues to heal and stops the self mutilating- Huggs to both of you

It wasn't just based on the info that he said but also the way that he was with Jade. He clearly had no experience with chins. He tried to pick her up by the scruff of the neck like a cat. That should have been my first sign. Anyways, I will watch Jade very closely and keep an eye on her injury. She is doing quite well and was actually cone free ALL day yesterday...and is still cone free. I do have the fleece bootie on that I have fixed so she can't remove.

If she has a setback at all then I will go out of town to get an x-ray if need be. But for now, things are coming along great. :)

I appreciate everyone's concern about my baby Jade. You have all been a great support and full of wonderful knowledge.

It sounds like Jade may be on the road to a full recovery and that is awesome news! I agree with you to watch her closely and make sure she continues to use her foot and doesn't begin to chew on it again now that the cone is off. But I'm sure she is much happier without the cone! Maybe the two of you will finally get to enjoy eachother without injury being in the way of full bonding! :)

Just to throw a spanner in the works ;)
I know of an exceptionally chinchilla competent vet who handles some chins by the scruff of their necks.

I think the issue here is not so much that the vets are right/wrong but that they have never given a proper diagnosis for Jade's problem & that they have not x-rayed her foot.
Regardless of anything else, the fact that Jade got her injury by being trapped in the mesh of a cage, developed a wound, & was in obvious pain which meant she chewed her legs, absolutely screams that she needed an x-ray.
I find it disappointing that they have not done so, despite your repeated requests, Jennifer.
I would suspect that since the injury is now a few weeks old (& she has been having pain relief etc) even if there was a fracture it is now being repaired by Jade's body - I just hope the repair is a decent one & that is the end of it all.
The bottom line is unless an x-ray is taken you will never know - that may or may not matter in the end. If she heals & has no further problems then it probably doesn't matter ............

What you have done with Jade is fantastic - I really do hope that she heals completely & that there is an end of this saga in sight for you both.

I have to agree with Claire on handling a chin by the scruff. I've seen many animals from ferrets, to rats, to cavies, cats, dogs, and yes, even chinchillas scruffed to be handled. I'm assuming this may just be the way a vet is taught to hand an animal. Doesn't make them a "bad vet".

I do hope Jade makes a full recovery.
