With necrosis setting in, I agree that the best option would be amputation at this point. Chins adapt very well with the loss of a limb. In fact, I had a chin here with only three legs and you would never know it by the way he jumped around and played.

I have two tripods here and they both do fine. Here's video of Sophie the tripod surfing in the playpen. The top is 2 feet high.

I agree with amputation. To me it is a no brainer - end the pain. Chins do very well with 3 legs. I have 2 that can do anything a four legged chin can do.

I'm so sorry the news wasn't better for you. I know this has to be terribly upsetting. But I agree with everyone that it is best for your chin to have the leg amputated. She will be out of pain and will adjust to tripod life quickly.

I have 2 tripods, they live together, and let me tell you, they are just as fast as my other babies! LOL

Animals are resiliant and I am sure she will adjust very well with just 3 legs.

Wow, I'm so sorry but as everyone has said, tripods do thrive. I wish you and Jade the best of luck.

myself and all 5 chin girls are sending lots of hugs to you and Jade, I know this must be a hard choice to make but it certainly sounds like it is for the best

Could you please clarify what the vet meant that the injury was not new? Did she somehow re-injure an old injury? I am so sorry you are going through this. I know the original breeder of this chin must be as heartbroken as you are. I wish you all the best.

There is...but it has taken some time to process. I was a ball of tears when I got home. So anyways...

The vet looked at her injury and didn't like the looks of it. He says that the injury is not new and as a result of her not using it much, he feels arthritis has set in. It is very stiff and doesn't bend well. He also says that it looks like their is necrotic tissue. Her toes appear black and there is nerve damage as she has no feeling in them at all. :(

At this point, he gave me some ointment to help soften the skin and let the scabs heal so he can see the extent of the damaged tissue. He did mention the possibility of amputation because of the dead tissue and lack of mobility in the leg. I have to see him within the next week.

Any ideas/suggestions/advice?

OK first I want to say that I am terribly sorry to be reading this update but not at all surprised. :(

Sadly, the vet has confirmed our fears that there is far more going on that meets the eye.

Since you were not told that the chin had a significant injury surely that is classed as selling a chin under false pretences? This chin was not fit to be sold, has been in considerable pain/discomfort (as evidenced by the persistent chewing) & the injury should have been properly treated when the initial injury occurred - xrays should have been taken & appropriate treatment carried out (in this case, probably amputation).

Proudmom you should NOT be having to go through this at all or be paying for any of this - you should also receive a full refund for the price of the chin as well as all the vets bills being covered.

Hi

I would of course not been able to tell her that the injury was so bad because I didn't know it was like that, so I never sold her the chin without telling her what I knew it happened to her foot, I told her that her foot was stuck, and sincerely, this has never happened to me and was never able to recognize that her injury was major, I thought she just had a small injury, because that is what it looked at the beginning, and when she was brought to sudbury, she spent about 5 days, without me knowing how her injury had progressed and not been able to let Jennifer know about her, and never meant to sell a chin with false pretences, that is a serious acussation, you are treating me as a lier here, and you have no right to call me like that.

I have refunded her with the amount of the vet bills so far, and I offered my help for any further procedure, the only thing is that I am not able to cover the full amount of the amputation because I am unemployed, but I offered her that as soon as I am able to sell a chin, which I am expecting a payment soon, I would be able to send her some funds, and my mom and my sisters said that they would be gathering some extra money to send to her to help cover the costs. Jennifer also was offered and she requested to get another pair of chins as well, but she told me that she would like to help Jade and that she loves her, so that decision is on hold, but I am willing to help in whatever she needs, whatever her decision may be.

Okay, let's keep this thread on track. Since obviously both parties involved are known members of this forum, finger pointing cannot continue. Please keep any kind of dispute to pm, not in open forum.

Chins with 3 legs do just fine. I have 2 girls here who are missing legs and you would not even notice they are missing a leg. They get around just fine. That might be the best option for your girl if it's not getting better. She will just keep chewing at it if it's hurting her.

So...as many of you know...Jade had an appt with the vet today. We were to go for an x-ray and to pick up some antibiotics. Well...it didn't quite go as planned.

The vet took a look and feel at Jade's foot and said very matter-of-factly, "I can tell you right now this doesn't look broken". I insisted on an x-ray and he said that it was not necessary. What vet refuses easy money???

Anyways, he said the foot is looking great, there is mobility and circulation. He says there is no sign of necrotic tissue as mentioned by the other vet I saw. When I asked him about the "deformed" look he pointed to the huge sore on the side. When I asked about her wanting to chew he mentioned that it is probably painful and the sensation is off from what she is used to. There are still two areas that need healing...the tip of a toe where she chewed off the nail and the larger sore on the inner side of the foot.

He prescribed me trimeth sulfa and azithromycin for the next 10 days. I also ordered some Critical Care that will be in on Monday.

Here are some pics of her foot that I took today.

Sore on inner foot (it is much larger than appears in the pic)

Wow, her foot looks much better than before, I am hoping that the new antibiotics make her foot heal completely, can't wait for the final results on those antibiotics

It was actually the 2nd vet that told me all that stuff. But yah...he TOTALLY sucked.

I will never step foot in there again.

Wow, that first vet sucks. He was like...TOTALLY wrong.
I'm really glad that there's good news!!! :D Yay Jade!!

Thanks for hanging in there with her! It looks like she is on the mend. I'm so glad you got good news!
