Whats the ideal size for a carrier?
I heard that a small dog/ cat carrier would be good, but I'm reluctant to use it because it's made out of plastic. Any suggestions?

You can use them if you need to just watch for any chewing - they aren't ideal for long term housing obviously. The smaller the carrier the better so that way if you were to slam on your breaks the chin would be safer than flying around in the carrier. If you are interested in getting a metal one Ryerson's chinchilla ranch sells them. They are around $22 for a two hole I think and they can probably ship it to you. just google ryerson chinchilla ranch and you should find their website. If not then chinchillas.com has carriers and they can probably ship it to you.

I just bought one from petsmart that is meant for small dogs. Gary chewed it for a second but was completely fine in it after that and hasn't tried to chew since. its worked perfectly for him

Fabric is useless. A chin will chew through that in nothing flat. I never recommend cloth or plastic carriers, only metal.

You also don't want it too big, in case of a car accident or breakdown the small carrier is easily to carry in a tow truck and prevents the chin from being thrown around inside.

Depending where you are there is a member that picks up caririers for us when she goes to the USA. I am in Ontario so it works out!

Cool, I live in Ontario too!
I really like the carriers from Ryerson's chinchilla ranch, but they can't ship to me.

Yes, that would be perfect assuming the dimensions are around the same as other chin carrier holes.

Your question about fabric carriers hadn't posted when I responded, so my first comment was in regards to using a plastic dog carrier. Definately don't use the fabric ones.
