How fast can spurs grow back?

Che was treated for spurs a while back (end of April) and had them filed down, he's a little off this evening so just wondering.

He has constant supply of good quality pellets and timothy hay as well as alfalfa once or twice a week and has a lot of toys/wood to chew on so perhaps i'm just being paranoid.

Some malo chins need to be filed every 6-8 weeks.

3 months is pretty typical. Some chins are really sensitive about their teeth and are more bothered by smaller spurs, requiring more frequent filings. I have 2 malo chins now and they both tend to be okay for 3 months between filings, give or take a week or two.

The vet did say before that the spurs weren't too bad and they couldn't have been there long so I guess he's just really sensitive to them.

He's going to the vets this afternoon, I can't stand the waiting.

Why is it that he was fine for almost 2 years until they popped up in April, yet now 2 and a half months later there is already a problem again? Is that likely to indicate malo rather than just spurs?

Vets can frequently miss points the first time. Depending on the degree of malocclusion, chins can need a filing as soon as 4 weeks.

If it's happening every 2-3 months what is the quality of life like? Is it kinder to have them put to sleep?

Has the chin had x-rays to rule out elogation? If so and the x-rays are OK it depends on how well the chin bounces back after a filing, if in a few days the chin is doing its chin thing and is acting normal, the a few days of discomfort is offset by two months of doing well, quality of life is still OK, if the chin does not do well after filings and is not getting relief then its time to make decisions.

i had a chin filed in june of 08, then again in august of 08 and then he was good until july of 10 and i have not filed him since then. i must say that i instilled an extremely agressive herbal treatment. very limted treats. lots of wood and mostly just alfalfa hay. i also feed him in addition to oxbow pellets (he is my only chin on oxbow) i give him beaphear plus that i get shipped in from the UK. he is also on daily meds for longterm pain and because of that he also gets daily acid reducer. daily lifeline. and sometimes i do still supplement with handfeeding if i see he isnt eating as much as i like him to eat. it usually kickstarts his appetite.

as for quality of life. it has been 3 years since his diagnosis. he is my most loving, playful, and mischievious chin. i simply adore him. BUT when the time comes that he is not acting himself or requires frequet vet visits i will make the decision for him to be pain free and i will let him go.
