Hi Kay!! I'm Kay too! 
When I go off for vacation (haven't had a real vacation in almost three years LOL- but I have went away for a few days) I usually have my brothers look after my chinchillas. They come over to my house once a day to check on them and see if they need anything. I usually try to make things as simple as possible for them. I have them call me while they are there so I can ask questions and make sure everything is alright.
When I get back, my chinchillas are usually okay. They don't seem to be affected by my absence really. I've never been gone more than 3 days though.

My parents come over to care for all of my animals, inluding my chin, when we are gone. The longest we were gone was for almost 2 weeks and my chin was just very happy to see me when we returned. Plus, a treat or two makes for an even better reunion!
I travel a few times each year for anywhere from 1-7 days. A friend is nice enough to come to my place to take care of my guys if it's under 3 days, but more than that and I'll take them to my parents' house so that my friend doesn't have to travel. My parents love the cuteness, but are deathly afraid to let them out and won't fully clean the cage (only spot clean), so I have to keep my travel time to under a week.
They're fine when they stay home, but they sleep a lot when I pick them up from my parents' house. My dad works from home and checks on them pretty frequently. He said they never sleep... or at least he never sees them fully asleep, and someone is always running on a wheel. I get a lot of the stink eye when I return, but they warm up pretty quickly once they realize they're going home.

I have my granddaughter help with the chins. She is chin savy (stayed with me for 2 years) and also worked for awhile for a vet that knows her chins. She comes in every day and feeds, checks water and chins. I don't have her clean much since she has enough to do feeding all. When I get back I have lots of cages to clean and have hay, poop and shavings all over the house. I know this and accept it and start cleaning right away.

I have my mother care for my chins when we are away. When I get back there is poop, hay and bedding EVERYWHERE! I usually get the stink eye and get ignored for a few days.

I have 4 dogs and a fish tank in addition to the 20 chins so I typically ask a friend to house sit. She's single and living at home so it's a nice break for her and I usually compensate with a bottle of wine/gas money/fridge full of food. If she's not available then things get a little complicated - small dogs usually go to one friends house, and then she or another friend visits the house to take care of the big dogs and the chins. This method sucks but it works because they have pets too and understand so we trade favors LOL.
