Hi, new to the forums and they are great. Quick question, would the superpets hay ball/roller be good for my chin? If not I may just use an unpainted pot, which is better and "cleaner"?

Also, looking to get a food crock that attaches to my cage. I can only find plastic ones. I did find one in petsmart that seems very thick and sturdy, I think its for ferrets. Will this work? Even the ones at quality cages are plastic. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

When it comes to food and water, I don't ever recommend using plastic. I want something I can sterilize if I need to and you can't do that with the plastic, especially if it gets cracks in it. These work pretty decently http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=1125 and you can clean them well.

As far as the hay holder, I would just use an unpainted pot or buy a hay rack that hangs on the side of the cage. Those balls not only seem like a pain in the butt, but I recall a person or two have a chin get their paw/teeth caught in them, so it's not something I would recommend.

I don't like the dishes that Tunes recommends because some of my chins figured out how to lift the cup up and dump everything. I like the ceramic hooded bowls that attached to the sides of the cages You can get them at Petsmart (in the parrot section) or drfostersmith has them also (bird section). I use the bigger one for hay as well. The chins also can't pee in them.

They do sell metal coop cups that attach to the cage at qualitycage. As far as the hay holder, I agree with what tunes, just use the unpainted pot but make sure you put it in the bottom of the cage as chins are known to redecorate in the middle of the night.

Unfortunately I can't find it on their website, but we got a decent bowl at Petsmart. It's very similar to the one Peggy posted, but the bowl actually "snaps" into the frame (which bolts to the cage), so it can't be overturned. I think we found it in the dog or cat bowls.

I definitely wouldn't recommend the hay balls; I have a friend who had his chin's head get stuck in one. He'd likely been stuck for hours, as it was overnight and my friend found him still stuck and very worn out the next morning (as if he'd been struggling a while). Luckily he wasn't hurt, just very shaken up!

The same thing happened to my Herby, except she had one of those hanging hay balls and she got her head stuck while I was out and had something not told me to go home and check on her, Lord knows what may have happened t her. I use an unglazed terra cotta pot for one of my chins, one of those ceramic chinchilla dust houses for another and one of the petsmart wooden hidey houses ( turned upside down )for Herby. All these work and cant hurt the chin when they eat.

Hi! I'm new to this site and new to being a chin "mom". I bought 2 metal 6" round bowls to put my food and hay in. A metal ring attaches to the cage and the bowl fits inside the ring nice and snug. I find that less hay is wasted this way.

I just use a toilet paper roll that I've cleaned all the paper off of (and make sure it's glue free) and stuff a handful of hay in that. Works great! Lewis loves to chew on it as well and it's cheap and sturdy (sometimes hah!)

Used to use the tube-stuffing method. Just reworking the cage and I might go with a KD pine box, either home-made or I'll order from simplyChintastic. They can chew and munch!

Only problem I had with the tubes is that they'll either throw the tube down into the bottom level (where they'll ignore it) or the hay gets pulled out and thrown everywhere.

How do you get the glue off? I can never seem to.

Some brands don't have glue. Forget offhand which, though.

Worst case, if its just glue spots you can cut out those sections with scissors or an exacto-knife, but better if it was never on to begin with.

Oh, thank you! I didn't know those kind of TP rolls existed. I'll have to google it!! Yea, that's what I end up doing is just poking holes where the glue is.
