Hi all,

I am putting together our Ferret Nation cage and about to head to the fabric store to buy massive amounts of fleece..haha. Just wondering when folks sew a layer of fleece do they just do only 2 layers or do they put something inside the 2 layers to absorb liquid? I have seen pictures of the fleece liners but can't really tell. And if I sew them how can I insure the threads will not cause any problems? Thanks!!

Some use 3 layers of fleece, some use 2, others use a layer of terry cloth in the middle.

You sew them "inside out", turn them right side out when you have a little space left to sew, then do an invisible stitch (I think that's what it's called).

If you are sewing liners, you can make the outside layer from other fabric too. Fleece is only really important if you are not going to sew. I use corduroy or flannel and sometimes I make them so that one side is corduroy and the other is flannel with a layer of fleece smashed between them. Your options open up a lot when you sew liners.

For sewing, there is a DIY in the chin section (http://www.chins-n-hedgies.com/forums/showthread.php?t=907). I haven't really read it closely to see how it compares to how I sew mine, but I know chinnie people here have used it.

THANK YOU!!!!!! I am going to start out just cutting one piece to get a few (hundred lol) ready and then I will graduate to sewing some, I think. Just trying to make sure I have the basics and lots of supplies ready and then when I get a moment I will be able to make some nicers one. Thanks!!!! Can't wait to get it all together!!!! Full nesting mode!! ;)

I would be sure to wash it once (or twice) before you do any cutting. Fleece is known to shrink a little. I also don't ever dry it in the dryer. Sometimes I put it in the dryer on delicate to speed things up, but then it gets hung up to dry.

From experience, no pre wash + drying on high = shrunken liner!

Yes, I will definately wash first. I keep seeing folks saying that so there must have been alot of fleece liners that shrunk and would be not good after taking all the time to sew them. Thanks for reminding me!! I will get the fleece today and wash it!!
