My little Zoe was a couple weeks pregnant when we brought her home, so I don't know if she's naturally a skinny chinny or not, but at the moment she has me worried.

After she had her kit she fed him, and fed him well. We separated them when the kit was 7 weeks old on the vet's recommendation, as we were worried that Zoe was getting too thin. That was 4 weeks ago, and she doesn't seem to have gained any weight, and at times seems even thinner!

She is drinking water, though not as much as either of my other chins. She's never been a big drinker anyway. She is eating some, but maybe 3/4 to 1 tablespoon of pellets a day. (We feed Kaytee Forti-Diet Pro Health Chinchilla Food.) Our male goes through about 2 tablespoons per day and the kit does as well, more when he's in a growth spurt.

When she was weighed at the vet 4 weeks ago, she was 1.3 pounds. Some sites say this is a normal weight for an adult female, others say she should be closer to 2 pounds.

Can anyone offer some insight or suggestions? I, and Zoe, would really appreciate it.

1.3 lbs is about 590 g. That's a smaller chin but not too small, especially after having kits. However, if she's a larger-bodied chin and her pre-pregnancy weight was more up in the 900s, then that is a very big loss and having that litter really drained her.

Chins are slow to gain weight back but one reason she may not be gaining and even why she may not have been able to nurse her kits without losing condition is the feed she is on. Kaytee is not a good brand of chin food. They have poor ingredients and chemical preservatives. Popular healthy pellets for chins are Oxbow, Mazuri, or a show rabbit pellet such as Manna Pro Sho, Purina Show Chow or Nutrena.

It might be a good idea to weigh her weekly for a while to make sure she is gaining weight. She should return to a healthy condition so that the ribs, spine and pelvic bones are not visible/ protruding and easily felt.

I also like to give my pregnant/nursing females, and kits a bit of alfalfa with their timmy/orchard hay for a little extra nutrients.

I agree with Sumiko. Change your feed to one of the good fresh brands. I would also offer freely fed good timothy hay (oxbow is a good brand and you may be able to find it at the pet store). Zoe needs good nutrition after all she has been through. The best way for a chin to gain weight by is eating quality food and hay. If you provide what has been suggested Zoe should gain weight gradually over the course of a month or two.
