I know I've been posting a lot lately, sorry >o<

Anyways, sometimes when my chinchilla is really hyper he'll bite me pretty hard. He doesn't appear to look nervous or threatened but maybe I just don't notice well.

Like, just tonight, I gave him a dust bath and he got super hyper, jumping around, running, and then he suddenly bit my hand pretty hard. He gave no warning or anything, he was calm at that moment too. I wash my hands before I come near him in case he smells something he wants to eat off my hands, but I did have dust on my hands from when he took a dust bath, could that be it?

Thanks for your replies!

I have the same problem. Before he just nibbled me to see if i was food or not. But right now he kind of nibbled on me hard enough for me to bleed. I need help with this too.

When a chin bites, do not put it down or back in the cage right away. If you are trying to pick it up, continue to do so. Never back off. Once you do, you have taught the chinchilla that biting will get it its way. The first thing I do is gently tap their nose and firmly say "no". Don't yell or hit the chinchilla; you could make things worse. After a a few times of not getting their way, the biting will taper off.

I agree with everything cuddlebug said.
They are like kids and they will push yr buttons to see how far they can go. :p I have two chins that try the biting game for longer playtime. SASSY PANTS!

Thank you,

Yes, he actually stops nibbling me, at first he nibbled me all the time, now he's not nibbling at all. I think part of the reason as well was that was extremely bored, after getting the necessities and cage and chinchilla, I was too broke to really get much else, so this weekend I got him a bunch of chew stuff and he seems a whole lot happier, I even sewed him a fleece hammock and he's sleeping in it now.

Thank you. He would bite the lace on my tank top, and when I pushed him away to try and make him stop (it wasn't a harsh push), he'd bite my pants in defiance. Quite a character! ;)
