Half of her mass broke off!!

Well it comes down to the basics I guess. First she does need to be treated for any bleeding and to prevent infection...and soon. I'm assuming tomorrow is when your appointment is, if it isn't please move it up immediately. Next is how much pain she is in? This is best monitored/determined...

    killing MRSA

I know this is an older thread, and this wasn't the suggestion but I just want to remind any hedgie owners reading this that they should never consider using tea tree oil as a disinfectant under any circumstance if they have hedgies. Think of it like a deadly peanut allergy.

    Safe Floor Play Area

I echo the yoga mat, more specifically there are ones from walmart that fit together like puzzle pieces ($10 for 6 of them I think). Quick, easy, and washable. Wash them first actually, because they have that rubbery plastic smell so who knows - it probably best to be safe.

more of a health concern for myself. Dont own a Hedge yet but I have a question

Yup, liners are the way to go. Watch out of you have diggers though, you may find that making a liner out of corduroy, all edges tucked in and sewed up (with a fleece middle to absorb any liquid) is worth the extra effort. It is a little more durable and it removes any risk of swallowing the...

    first bath

I too use flaxseed oil. I don't apply it directly unless we have had bare skin patches from other known causes, but I don't see any issue with that approach. I find it a little easier to squeeze a full capsule into a cup of warm water, stir very well (so that the oil drops break up) and pour...

    healthy weight?

All hedgies are different. What is his shape? Is he round (chest can be visibly seen on either side of his face, or is he more of a long sausage)? Many judge weight by the hedgehogs ability to curl in a ball (and tuck everything safely in). If there are stomach rolls when the hog is curled then...

New mommy with a lot of questions:)

Oil heaters are best (because they are safer) but they are more money. I think places like Walmart would have them fairly cheap. Worth the investment if you decide to switch or upgrade. You'll know if she has switched to a water bottle because there will be crumbs in her dish. Hope this works...

Train in Alberta (Medicine Hat to Red Deer)

Hi, Looking for anyone who can help with a train in the next few days for a hedgie in need. There is a surrender in Medicine Hat, Alberta. We have room in our rescue for him but I'm looking for anyone who is able to help transport him. Both my husband and I are down with the flu and this...

    New hedgie mother (almost)

Welcome to the group - we love pictures :) Just remember to minimize handling on day 1 so she gets comfortable with her new environment and no treats for at least the first two weeks.

    Ella, ? - Sept 3, 2012

Sorry for the late post, sometimes there are just losses that are really hard to accept and this was one of them. Ella came to us in horrible shape, broken, jaw, a few broken toes, severe quill loss, malnutrition (despite being a very large lady). She had been found along the road and was...

    I made a new cage!!

Very nice, I'm assuming there is good airflow. It looks like you can easily change the liner too!

    cat food mix

Well, your current food may be too high in fat (15% is somewhat high unless you are dealing with a small hog who runs more than he/she eats). It really depends on how your hedgie's weight is. The ingredients were good though. The new food you suggest might be ok but I have no idea what corn...

New Hedgie (3 months old) Owner

Welcome! Yes, they are generally stressed for the first few weeks, though the poop should clear up in a few days. Make sure he is eating and drinking and has a place to hide. Lots of information on the forum about housing, temperature, food, handling, illness - just snoop around. Welcome to...

    Hedgie is 'off'

Is he still on hard food? He may need soft food to help with aging teeth. Also, if he is not consuming water, you will need to syringe it asap. He will need at least 20 cc of water a day. If he still isn't eating you can also syringe food (canned A/D available from any vet's office). Also 20...

Lilly coming home in 6 days!

Sounds like you are good to go. Remember no treats until she is well established (a few weeks probably). As winter comes, you may need to worry about light. For now a temperature gage and a small scale (measures in grams) will be very helpful. Good luck, looking forward to hearing about Lilly!
