    Such conflicting information!!!!!

I worry about people stressing their chins out or completely losing the trust of their animals in the beginning with advice like that. The article is incredibly long with a lot of disclaimers I suspect new chin people may not read and just take it to mean that they should manhandle their chins...

    Mexican chinchilla?

That doesn't even make sense, but I guess it doesn't matter. :) I don't think that chins and rats would have much luck making babies. It is interesting that the writers for that show would mention chins at all!

    Mother's Death

YAY! Reading the last update made me so happy after a really horrible day of chinnie issues here. :)

    Ate a piece of twine?

That's about it....all you can do is make sure he's acting normally. It would probably have caused a problem for your chin by now, so I wouldn't worry too much. When 24 hours have passed after a chin has eaten something like that it's probably already gone through the chin.

    powdering pellets

I have a 15 year old female, who I have had since she was young. She has always put back little tiny pieces of her pellets into her dish. After a day it looks like someone ground up all the pellets! I just dump out the food dish and start over with new pellets every evening. There are a few...

    Better Pan Cleaning Liquid

The vinegar is going to do the best of anything I know of for thorough cleaning. It cleans the urine deposits completely as well as any other deposits. You could clean the pans off with soapy water after you use the vinegar. Vinegar is going to leave a residue behind if you don't rinse it off...

    Water help.

Oh yeah, I actually fill up all my waterbottles with reverse osmosis water from a reverse osmosis machine. There's a company in town that keeps their machines maintained very well and the machines provide great water. We drink it and the animals drink it...the tap water here is questionable as...

    Water help.

You could get filtered or reverse osmosis bottled water and use it for the chins. I think they have it in Canada...we have it at grocery stores, walmart and other places that sell gallons of bottled water.

Help! Crazy chin that has gotten over gate once and is now a fearless plunging jumper

I am so sorry that you had this happen. You definitely need a taller gate! Or, start having playtime in a more enclosed area like a bathroom. I can't trust the regular playpens or gates anymore. My chins have learned to get up on counter tops... :(

    Traveling with your Chin...

If you do it correctly, you can take chins with you in the car frequently. It's really about making the chins comfortable. That means putting them in a carrier that allows for them to feel safe and not scared. You don't just hold them and take them in the car...that could be disastrous...

    Molding Apple Sticks?

If wood isn't dried well enough and it's stored in an enclosed little space, it can mold very easily. It just needs to have a little moisture either in the wood or in a container with it. Now, in your case, an open cloth storage box wouldn't hold onto moisture so the wood must not have been...

I think my new chin is preggers...help!

Definitely separate them. You'll need another cage. When the babies are weaned (somewhere around 8 or 9 weeks-ish), you can put the boy babies in with the dad and leave the girl babies in with mama. I'm sorry that this is your first experience with chins. It is less than ideal, but...

    couple of questions

White glue like Elmer's is just fine. :) It's nontoxic and once it is dried it doesn't seem to make the chins want to chew at it any more than they would on the wood itself.

    Hello! Newbie...

Welcome! I think I know the breeder you purchased your chins, she is a very great breeder. :) I'm sorry to hear about your piggies. We have two of them and I don't even want to think about losing them, they're too goofy and darling and sweet. :) The chins are different for sure, you'll...

    pee on fur

More dustbaths can help with keeping her clean. Usually dustbaths are enough to keep chins clean.

    Ringworm: Sulphur or Athletes Powder

Keep them in a clean environment with good ventilation, as well. They are less stressed that way and less stress is better for the immune system.

    Hay?

When hay starts to go stale it starts to fall apart and become dusty. Definitely store the hay in a cool, dry place with good ventilation to ensure it doesn't mold. Hay can keep for 6 months to a year, maybe longer as long as it doesn't get moldy or dry out.

    Treats help

I like to give the digestive challenged chinnies dried peppermint, and maybe some dried dandelion. I just give maybe 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon, they seem to love that. :)

Complaining at Petstores about Chinchilla Care?

I don't go into petstores anymore. I've been asked to leave a few times when I tried to ask them to change things. They aren't so nice sometimes, and don't seem to care about losing customers around here. You could always tell the manager at the store you were in that you don't plan on coming...
