WA State ECBC 2013 Fall Field Day

Is anyone interested in any animals? I'm already bringing some animals that were purchased by someone who will be at the WA show but I may fill up the rest of the holes in my carrier with animals to show and possibly animals that I will be selling. Also, if anyone is interested in some proven...

    Oxbow, Mazuri, Manna Pro Ect

We use Manna Pro SHO and the chins do very well on it. Luckily the mill is local so the bags I get are fresh.

    How red is too red??

His ears look fine from those pictures. An warm chin's ears are a bright red and the veins/blood vessels are very visible.

    Show grooming

Chins can slip fur if you grab them too tightly or pull too hard on an area which is uncombed or matted. Small short strokes should be used at first, to seprate all the hairs. I use a hacksaw blade for chins that are really dense and blowing a lot of fur. You run it over them from tail to...

    Free feed or scheduled?

I feed once daily but fill feeders to the top. I have a few chins who waste feed so I just don't fill those feeders completely. They tend to stop wasting it when they don't have a full feeder to dig through.

    milky eyes???

Is it only seen after dust baths? If not, it could be an eye infection. I had a rescue chin who came in with a milky discharge in her eyes and I treated her with Terramycin eye ointment to clear up the infection.

    Welcome!

    Tough Toys?

I second the manzanita wood. It's a hardwood and takes most chins longer to chew up. There are probably members selling manzanita in the classifieds section here.

    Apple wood sticks

Apple sticks are great safe chew items. Most of mine just strip the bark and leave the rest on the cage bottom.

    Chinchillas get along but mount?

The mounting is a behavior to establish dominance. It is normal in the beginning of a chin intro but something to keep an eye on if it persists, because it can escalate to fighting. Make sure they are not biting or pulling fur because if this occurs, you will need to separate.

WA State ECBC 2013 Fall Field Day

Shahna, Tab, and I have carpooled up to some WA and OR shows in the past. It's a nice scenic drive. I have to fly this year though as my new job won't allow me to take any time off yet. Jeremiah, I'll have extra combs if you need to borrow any.

WA State ECBC 2013 Fall Field Day

I'll be there to help out with anything. I may bring a few chins to show and maybe some to sell. I'll be flying in so I will be limited on number but I'll bring what I have space for.

    Chinchillas as tech pets

The writer of this article emailed me a couple weeks ago wanting to do a phone interview with me about chinchillas for the SF Chronicle. I responded to her email the next day but she never got back to me. I guess she got ahold of Lani first.

    Supplements during pregnancy

I've given cuttlebone before to nursing moms with larger litters if I noticed their teeth were turning white but now I just give alfalfa hay to my pregnant/nursing females and growers. Alfalfa hay has a higher Calcium:Phosphorous ratio than grass hays and I feel it is a good source of calcium...

Why do show chins look so different?

I know of some breeders in CA who breed solely for wholesaling to the pet store suppliers. Since they don't belong to any breeders organizations or attend shows, they are not breeding to the standards we want to see in our chins. These breeders do not have goals of producing large blocky...

Strangest Purchase you made for chins

A tube of KY jelly for checking hair rings... that was an awkward purchase.

    How long until bad?

As long as it's stored properly in a cool dry place, feed is good up to 6 months from the mill date. Some feeds will list an expiration date one year past the mill date but I recall reading that certain vitamins will begin to degrade by around 6 months. My feed is milled locally and I...
