milky eyes???

Hi I need advise on my chinchilla Charlie. She has a milky substance in the corners of her eyes. Not always there I noticed it tonight then I looked a few minutes later it was gone then cane back again. Any ideas?

Is it only seen after dust baths? If not, it could be an eye infection. I had a rescue chin who came in with a milky discharge in her eyes and I treated her with Terramycin eye ointment to clear up the infection.

I've also experienced this with one of my chinchillas. She's fairly new and got so stressed out from the journey to my house that I'm reluctant to have her travel to the vets. The discharge is only in her right eye and seems to be there for a few minutes and then disappears. The eye itself seems to be slightly more closed than her right one, and the fur around it is a little damp. Any ideas?

Hi no shes not had a dust bath since last night. Shes just woke up but never noticed it before. Thinking of getting rid of there shavings. could I replace it with a fleece blanket on bottom of cage does anyone know? And just change it over and wash them? Un sure as I've always used shavings.

You can use fleece to line the cage. There are people on here who make fleece liners. I was using aspen bedding, but my little guy made a huge mess with it and I didn't have time to order liners, so I just went to Jo-Ann's and bought some fleece (anti-pill), ran it through the washer and dryer (to account for shrinkage), then cut it to fit my cage. I used two layers (one big piece folded in half since I can't sew). It seems to work pretty well! You could put a towel in between the layers for more absorbency, but then you'd have to sew it shut since the towel is not safe. Most chins don't chew fleece though.

Thanks for advise think I'm same can't sew for toffee!! But could manage to fold one in half. Both of mine are same they throw there shavings all over the place!! Won't miss that

You could get a fleece that is bigger than your base pan and just wrap it around and safety pin the excess to the bottom side of the pan.

Yeah, I put up with the shavings for about a week, then I said forget that mess!!!

Thanks everyone cleaned there cage last night and put down a fleece blanket doubled over. Got up this morning it was great not having to sweep all the shavings they have thrown out in the night! Don't know how i lasted so long on the shavings !! Charles eyes look fine again this morning no milky substance in her eyes today. Hopefully it was just she had something in them fingers crossed I'll keep an eye on her

Hi me again looked at charlies eyes there's no milky substance but her right eye seems to be a little wet, I'm trying to figure out how to put a picture on but can't could this be from earlier or would it have dried ut by now?

Hi latest on charlies eyes. Was going to let them out for there normal mad hour and noticed that the milky substance is back in the corner of her eyes. I'm going to take her to the vets tomorrow shes not herself at all she looks really fed up and sorry for herself. Does anyone know of a specialist vet in the uk west Yorkshire area. I'm not sure if my vet is really qualified for chins. I take all my other pets there cat and rabbit but unsure. Any help would be great.
