Working with a 1 year old pissy Hedgie?

So I saw an ad on CL for a free hedgie, free because his disposition isn't great.

My question would be is it possible to at 1 year socialize this guy and have him be friendly? Or is he too old to try? I do know sometimes it doesnt matter and some hedgies are happy and content without interaction.

I am really interested and the gentleman rehoming him has all his medical records and breeder paperwork.

I do want a social pet hedgehog, so what do you guys think about trying to work with him- shot in the dark?

Yes, it is possible for him to come around. It depends on if he is grumpy because of lack of socialization or if he is a shy hedgehog to begin with. You could contact the breeder for some information on him.

Thanks for the reply. I am awaiting a response from the man. I will most definitely ask him whether its lack of socialization or if he is shy.

It takes lots of patience, but a shy, grumpy hedgehog can definitely be won over. I have an old girl who came to me as a rescue. She was adopted by my fiance nearly 3 years ago, and when he moved to Edmonton, I took over her care. It was only recently that she decided I was safe, and would actually allow herself to be picked up without hissing. When we first met her, even sitting on my lap (in her bag) was cause to hiss, pop and click. She was scared, but it's been a rewarding journey to where we are now.

Good luck and be patient! Even the grumpiest hedgehogs can be lovable in their own special way.

I however, am talking to someone rehoming a 8 week old cinnacot & I may pick her up as early as Friday ) My fingers are crossed for this one.

That's how my Squee is, I've only had him for three months, but i got him at two yearls old from a little girl who never held him or anything. He squeaks, hiss, pop clicks - anything he can at me. But he's getting a little better. I think it will still be a while before i can pick him up with out him hissing and trying to eat me.

I adopted my darling Ronnie when she was 4 years old. She had never been handled and was completely unsocialized. I didn't even see her face for the first few weeks! By the time she passed away at almost 6 years of age, she was a complete cuddlebug. It's never, never too late. :thumbsup:
