With my german shepherds there is a section at the very bottom that asks if the person would like to donate and the amount are able to donate (on the relinquish form).
We never demand an amount and I cant remember a single time anyone has every given me a donation when they handed in their animal to be honest; though it is still at the bottom just in case.
Most people don't know the reality of how much a true rescue costs. I am just thankful we are a 501(3)c and donations are tax deductible.
I always explain when someone adopts that your adoption fee you pay only skims the surface. We will invest Thousands into dogs with hip replacements, MRI, Open Heart surgeries and everything else.... and with over 60 shepherds at any given time… -dog9- :heart3:

At Wee Companions we ask for a donation with relinquished animals. The reality is, we rarely get anything. It would be wonderful to get a donation with each animal to help with their care until they are adopted. Bottom line is, that most people won't pay to relinquish an animal. They feel they are doing you a favor by "donating" their animal and whatever supplies to your rescue. As if they think we normally go out and buy our stock. :hmm:

We don't demand a relinquish fee because it is all about what is best for the animal. Too many people when faced with having to pay to give up an animal would rather "set it free" than have to pay.

I guess people get them because they're cute and look soft and fuzzy, and they don't realize what they're getting into. Chins are a lot of work and really aren't just for anyone. Sometimes people just don't listen no matter how hard you try to tell them something. But, lesson learned. maybe next time she'll listen to you. It's a good thing that she has a good friend like you to try to lead her in the right direction.

Out of curiosity. what was the name of the rescue that charged to take these chins?

It's actually a rabbit and guinea pig rescue but they have experience with chinchillas too. It's a married couple that runs it out of their home so they don't have a business name really. I got their number from the vet I take Marble to. The Humane Society also charges a reliquishing fee here in atlanta. I know this because i was looking to give my dog up to them since I was having some trouble with my Condo association allowing me to keep him. I didn't end up sending him there though, my inlaws offered to take him since they were looking for another dog to keep the one they had some company.

I do agree with you that she shouldn't have taken these chins. I also do think it serves her right to have to pay to give them to a rescue. I think what I am stuck on is that most people wouldn't have paid it and would have let them go, or something worse because they don't have $150 to spend on giving them to a rescue.

Just as an FYI, I am only 5 hours away from you. If you ever know of someone who needs to surrender a chin, I am willing to drive half way. I don't charge a surrender fee, but I am always open to donations when someone surrenders. Supplies, money, cages, etc. Anything helps. My rescue website is jaxchinchillarescue.webs.com
