As far as buying from a local breeder, I myself am not willing to travel hours to go to a ranch when there are animals who need to be adopted from shelters and irresponsible breeder in my town. Especially when I only intend them to be a pet.

I don't know why this thread is being bumped up again since it looked like it was done an over with, but I just wanted to comment....

If you are "adopting" them from the irresponsible breeder, you aren't doing much. I assume she isn't giving them to you for free and she isn't "adopting" them out, she's selling them. If you buy them, you are only supporting her and keeping her in business, thus increasing the longevity of her irresponsible breeding. If no one is buying from her, she has no income, thus probably won't breed any longer since money is the big reason why most BYB's breed.

THAT'S why we tell people it's best to buy from a RESPONSIBLE breeder, if they do not choose to adopt from a rescue. They are supporting someone who knows what they're doing, and doing it for the right reasons, instead of back yard breeder Joe who breeds anything and everything just to make a buck. They are also going to be getting a healthy chin with a known background. I know we would like to save them all, but unfortunately, we can't. In a sense you are helping them by NOT buying from the irresponsible breeders, because more than likely if they aren't getting any business, they're going to quit.

Why on earth would a pet owner who expects to love their chin for 15+ years buy from a irresponsible breeder. Malocclusion and heart murmurs are enough of a problem, can't imagine what the percentage must be in the BYB world.

I AM willing to drive hours to buy from a responsible breeder and ensure I'm getting a healthier animal and support breeders who take pride in what they are breeding.

I meant an irresponsible owner, sorry. I only said this because I got one of my chins from a terrible owner who had no clue what he was doing. I wouldnt buy from a BYB or irresponsible breeder. I have turned in three BYB's to local animal control- one was a major hoarding case. Im sorry I stired up this arguement again. I really meant owner not breeder.

With my first chins I did drive 2 hours to get, then I found out how many chins are in shelters. Only one of my chins has ever come from a breeder and I dont regret getting any one them.
