Pictures of Sugar today!

Wanted to post some pictures of Sugar today. The first is of my daughter holding him...this is what he looks like when he is coming out of a food coma!:) Eyes just opening. The second one we had to contain him as getting a picture of him is impossible while on the ground as he just does not hold still for a second and every picture that I have of him is a white blur!

I'll try to have my husband get a picture while I'm feeding him..it is the sweetest thing and something I will miss as he only has a few left...reminds me of weaning our children off of the bottle. That last bedtime bottle was just the saddest event ever and I am dreading his last feeding as well but it must be done. He is just like a baby...takes the syringe with his eyes closed and sleepy and remains that way for a few minutes after he is done...then suddenly opens his eyes and is off!

Here are some better "food coma" pictures. I can assure you all...he is not dead in these pictures! He lays like this after eating for anywhere from 2 minutes to 30 minutes...just a little chin nap after eating...such sweet bonding time!

Happy Mother's Day to All of You to - all of you are mother's to furry little children!!!

OMG these pictures kill me. How cute is he!

Darn cute when he is asleep but now that he is feeling better he has taken to nipping everyone's fingers since he was getting fed everytime we picked him up! He associates hands with syringes and syringes = food, therefore...CHOMP!!!

He is now completely weaned and eating and drinking on his own, no meds. We brought him home weighing 570 gms, he went down to 540 at his lowest and he is maintaining his weight off of CC and LL between 585 and 589 gms. So far, so good.

Still has the head tilt and walks in only one direction (to the right, with his head tilted down and to the right, looking at you with his left eye) which generally means he wanders in large circles - this makes him very easy to watch as he generall follows the perimeter of a room. If you wait in one spot he will eventually bumo into your leg! If you put him down in the center of a room, he will initially run in tight circles, then he gradually slows down and widens the perimeter of his circle. He rarely, if ever, goes under anything or over anything except for a PVC pipe that I put down for him so I think he may have depth perception issues - not sure on that one. He does not climp up on anything either. Makes finding things for him to play on a challenge as he generally just uses them as an obstacle course and bumps into them while wandering in circles. I wondered for a time if he was blind as well as deaf but he can see a shredded wheat a mile away! My husband calls him "Stumbling Stuey"!

What a little love bug! So glad that he's doing well off the meds!

Sugar Ray Update!

I just wanted to post an update on Sugar Ray for those of you who have read this thread. Amazingly, despite only being given a 10% chance of survival after developing severe stasis and head tilt at the age of 5 months, he celebrated his 1st Birthday yesterday. He continues to thrill and amaze me everyday with his zest for life, his enthusiasm for every minute of every day. He is the most amazing chin that I have ever owned and I love him deeply. I was tempted several times during his ordeal to end it all for him but he refused to give up and thus, so did I. I have tried to post an updated picture but unfortunately anytime I try to post an attachment I get an error message saying I have exceeded my quota. I have tried e-mailing the administrators but unfortunately no response. If anyone else knows hoe to fix this please help.

I think my chin is going through something similar? Whats the stasis??? And the digestive tract dying? What are the common symptoms? I took my chin to the vet too, and he gave her some meds to get her gut moving because he thinks her digestive systom has just stopped working- so shes in imense stomach pains. Is this the same thing???

Update on "Sugar Ray"/Stuart

Hello all! For those of you who remember Stuart (who we called Sugar Ray at the time because he was such a fighter), I wanted to give you a 2 year update on this amazing chinchilla.

As most of you know, we had an uphill battle with him for a very long time (for those of you who don't - just read this thread and it will give you some idea)!

Several months ago, I decided that despite the head tilt and walking in circles that he appeared healthy enough to try breeding and physically he is one of the most striking PW's that I have ever seen. Since his issues had to do with an infection and was not a genetic issue, my vet agreed that it was worth a shot if he was actually able to stay in one place long enough to get the deed done. Well he did!

Wendy T. was wonderful enough to sell me her 3rd Best of Show Beige Female from ECBC Nationals last year as a cagemate for Stuart and after a long and hard labor this morning, Bonus littered 4 kits.

Kit 1: **** PW Male - 46 gms (looks just like Stuart)
Kit 2: Beige Male (stillborn after a long labor)
Kit 3: Beige Female - 51 gms
Kit 4: PW Female - 47 gms

I am so grateful that she delivered 3 healthy kits and what a nice variety! I will post photos later after the kits dry and fluff and mom has a chance to rest.

Having this litter today made the disappointment of not being able to attend ECBC Nationals that much easier to take! :)
