AWWW GEEZ, I did not know he was a white! I ADORE whites and REALLY hate that first vet now! Rodents have a faster metabolism than cats and dogs, since Covenia was made for cat and dog metabolism, it can't be used for 14 days on rodents, it only works for 7 days. He is finally on tract with a treatment plan that can work, give him a big scritchie for me please!

You all will have to help me figure out the perfect name for him. Since everyone has been so supportive and so much help...I figure he belongs to all of us now!

I'm so glad that he's doing better!!!

Muhammed Ali, Rocky Marciano, George Foreman, Mike Tyson...all great fighters, but...

I know I'm dating myself, but since he is such a pretty white chinchilla, I think the word "Sugar" should be in his name...that leads me to Sugar Ray Robinson, who once said,

“To be a champ, you have to believe in yourself when nobody else will.”

In the 70s, a young fighter known as Sugar Ray Leonard came on the scene and won a gold medal at the Montreal Olympics. He is considered one of the best fighters of all time. He said,

"They say that I'm stubborn, and my wife says that, too, but it's paid off so far".

Since he's definitely a fighter, I propose "Sugar Ray ________" as a name for OUR little fighter!!!

Give him a kiss from me!!!

Lynn - that is perfect!!! I think I may let you name all of my chins from now on! It is just past his 3 am feeding and my daughter is sound asleep (some breeder she is!), I will pass it by her in the morning but I definitely like it!!! As far as dating yourself - yep, I remember Sugar Ray too!

I'm so glad he is on the right track to recovery .. finally! I wish you the best of luck with him, he's adorable! I also agree with Lynn .. Sugar is an adorable name :))

All fingers and paws crossed here, hoping for good news at your next update!

He went downhill again last night!:tantrum: Started pooping like a champ yesterday but cleaned his cage before I went to bed and not one single dropping since midnight last night! His appetite for CC was down too and belly was distended.

We just got back from seeing an exotics vet in Columbus who seemed to know what she was doing. She was realistic but says about 10% of chins will pull out of this and since he is already fighting so hard, he may be one of them. Also interesting is that she does not have any research to the effect but says she sees that this is more common in whites???

She pulled him off of the oral Metacam and has me giving Metacam injections twice a day along with Buprenex injections every 8 hours for pain. She started him on a motility drug, Reglan, twice a day along with Zantac once a day (this relaces the Famotidine). He is to continue with his Baytril injections twice a day and she has me increasing his SQ fluids as tolerated as long as he is urinating.

She gave additional meds to transition him to once he is passing stool again (oral metacam and Cisapride).

One other interesting thing she suggested was to give him the droppings from one of my healthy chins. the idea is that if he ingests them (which chins often do) he will be ingesting healthy bacteria to help regain the balance in his GI tract.

Since we just got home (2 hour drive each way) he missed a feeding of CC and just took 6 cc's for me...that is good for today. I also just gave him 3 injections and he will get 2 more tonight!

I think it is time to change his name again - "Pin Cushion" sounds about right! My poor baby!!!

Its called the new game stick-a-chin, that is what I called it with Lu. When I gave droppings I put it right in the CC just before giving, that was for Gino when he had stasis. The buprenex has to be used with the motility drugs since is slows motility, double edge sword there. Never heard of the white thing before. Stasis stinks, its a up and down thing and can go on for weeks, that with the ear thing you have your hands full. I am assuming you are doing the warm compresses and massages and getting him exercise also? You also might read menageries thread on stasis for inspiration and to see it can turn out well.

Yep...doing all of that, his little rice sock sits on the kitchen counter right next to the microwave. We just got done with his 2nd exercise period of the day, it should have been his 3rd but we were either in the car or in the exam room all afternoon so he missed his mid-day run. I have a very large master bath that I let him run around in for about 15 minutes each time...since all he does is run in circles it looks like he is trying out for the track team!

I have to admit the tummy massages are a trial as he does not like them, he whimpers and tries to get away but I continue to try. I am sure that if he makes it, he will either love me or hate me to pieces!!!

So weird that he can be so active yet produce no poop yet today! I am hoping for lots of presents later tonight ot tomorrow morning.

He was getting 10-12 ml of lactated ringers SQ twice a day. The new vet today said that as long as he is urinating and absorbing the fluid I could up it to 20 ml twice a day if he tolerates it. He also gets what is mixed with his Critical Care as I am feeding that to him by syringe.

I was going to update later this afternoon hoping that I would have a poop report!

So, he is still hanging on. More sleepy today but I am assuming that is due to the narcotic 3 x day. He is still eating CC but not as much as he was 2 days ago but since he still isn't pooping who can blame him - there is only so much room in that belly. He is tolerating the tummy massages much better since last night - almost seems to enjoy them and only fights until he gets himself into his own upside down position that he finds comfortable. Still very active when I put him in the bathroom but he seems to be running in tighter circles today, don't know if that is coincidence or if the ear infection is progressing??? He is tolerating all of his shots pretty well for a little fellow - he gets 5 in the morning, 1 in the afternoon and 4 at night. His weight is up by 20 gms today from yesterday and that was before I fed him - I am not too excited about that because that is probably just everything that I put in him yesterday that can't make it back out!

He is asleep right now in my study right next to the computer where I can keep a close eye on him. Funny thing that I have noticed is that when I go upstairs for any length of time, one of our two small dogs sneaks in here and lays on the floor underneath his cage. When I catch them, they just look at me like "What, I'm just watching him for you!" and then they leave the room. This is odd behavior because they have been trained to stay in the more common rooms in the house and never come to the front of our house where the study, dining room and living room are located. Don't worry, I know to keep them away and this just started yesterday when I noticed our Maltipoo Bailey in here, today it was our Havanese Jack. I will need to shut the door behind me when I leave the room, I don't think that they would hurt him, they are acting curious and concerned but I don't want to take any chances.

I will update again later today, hopefully with positive news.

8:30 pm here in Ohio and we have about 20 poops in our cage and one perky, lopsided chinchilla!!!:dance3:

Okay, maybe I shouldn't overdo it on the happy dance because he has already had so many ups and downs but I have never been so excited about poop in my life. My daughter thinks I have lost my mind!

Atta boy Sugar Ray!!Keep on pooping on!!!We are definitely praying for poos and continue recovery!:thumbsup:
