OH my! I really hope that it's not too bad. I would check with your building super as to other cases in your area. The Toronto Health Department should have some good info. You can also call the rental tribunal to see what the super is obligated to do.

Good luck! I know this is a real pain in the butt but it does sound like you caught it quick!

I hope that link helps.

I am really excited after reading this thread. I know it is of no excitement to you (or anyone dealing with bed bugs) but I am extremely interested!

I work at an entomology lab and my research is actually focused on the bed bug, Cimex lectularius. I have 5 colonies of field-collected and laboratory-reared strains and do a lot of work with efficacy of products against them. I know it is a pain to deal with (yes, I have experienced bed bug bites and welt reactions as I wanted to determine what type of reaction I would have and the extent) and difficult to eradicate due to their resistance to many pyrethrin-based pesticides but I am extremely interested in any information you could give me, especially if you have actually seen them on your chinchilla and if it fed on your chinchilla. Pictures are helpful also.

I can also give you input on my experience of treatment (we have tested probably every product on the market that has a label claim against bed bugs, both rapid-kill and Insect Growth Regulators), traps, and Integrated Pest Management which may be helpful.

Luckily, bed bugs are not known to transmit any diseases like mosquitoes and ticks are capable of so there is no health threat to you or your chinchilla. However, they can cause a lot of irritation as those bed bug bites welt up and become extremely itchy!

I am going to PM you...

I'm glad you found out what it was! Did the doc tell you how to get rid of those little pests? I would love to know a for sure answer!! :)

my chin does as they do get an itch the same way we do. It is very rare that chins would get mites etc as yes their fur is to thick for fleas etc to get into. Just in case you may have a little un wanted guest wash your bed clothes on a 90degree wash and go through that room and the area you keep your chin and see if you see another you maybe able to locate where it is coming from and what it is. Have you tried to google the insect that you found? try typing in your discription of it see if yu find out what it is that way. Best of luck x
