My 8 year old chinchilla got 2 molars trimmed in December as they were overgrown. Dr did not do x rays, but said it would be every year or so to re trim. I’ve seen him swat at his mouth a few times since but not every day or very often, usually once or twice in a week. Are the molars already grown too long again, or am I overthinking it and my chinchilla is just cleaning his nose?

It's hard to say if they teeth have regrown enough to need another trim or not. Depending on diet and genetics their teeth can grow up to about 1/4 inch per month (a few inches a year), so depending on why they got over grown, like if he isn't eating lots of hay, chew sticks, and stuff like that to wear them down, or if they aren't lined up right, you will need them trimmed and filed again sooner. It's not uncommon for chins with dental issues to need teeth trims every few months. However if the only sign of an issue is an occasional paw swipe (no drool, still eating his pellets and lots of hay, still chewing on things, no teary eyes, etc) it could be just cleaning around his mouth or nose.
