Well when I saw the listing for my chin she looked very dark. So I thought... hmm dark like a shadow. So it was going to be shadow.
The more I thought about it the more of a cliche i thought it was soo I asked my boyfriend, who speaks fluent Spanish, what shadow was in spanish.
Thus Sombra.
It totally stuck.
We call her Sombers for short :]

Only have the one chin named Che. I too like human names, all my pets have them. Che Guevara was someone I was very interested in and reading about a lot at the time when I got him. I thought it would make a good name and hadn't come across anyone else with a pet called Che before.

I always thought it would be cute if you named a female chinchilla "Topo bella", Bella for short. In Italian it means beautiful mouse.

Well basically i had never heard of chinchillas before i got my two chinchillas. I was a big fan of this japanese cartoon: called 'Totoro'? From my neighbour totoro?... if anyone knows it... And one day i went on the computer, randomly typed in 'the real totoro' (random i no) and found out the cartoon was inspired by chinchillas! I looked at more pics of chinchillas and found them sooo adorable. Then I adopted a standard grey chinchilla and a white one. The grey one was named totoro, as he looked jus lyk totoro in the cartoon (type in totoro into google images, so lyk a chinchilla!) nd the white one chichi because...well... simply thought of chinchilla...then chinnie...then chichi...just fitted...lol

i usually have themes for my animals.
like the hamsters are Lock, Shock, and Barrel (passed on) - from the movie The Nightmare Before Christmas.
the mice are Aphrodite, Persephone, and Athena (passed on) - greek goddess.
the dumbo rat Bruce - named from the shark on Finding Nemo.

and our chinchilla when we get her in January will be LunaBelle (no theme). hopefully the name sticks if not i have a list of names for her

Kodah. It used to be Pikachu but I thought it was kind of stupid. I named him Kodah because I was obsessed with a book at the time and the main character was "Kouta" but I spell it Kodah. :)

My chinny Miles is named after Miles Davis. I went through a time when all my pets were named after my favorite music artists.

We got our first chin and decided to name him Timothy, because they eat timothy hay. a month later, when we got our second chin, Benjamin just seemed to fit well with timothy

Monk, who I brought home this week and is my first chinchilla. Named so because like a monk, he is a single chinchilla with no intentions of breeding. So far his patience and tolerance quite fit the name, but I've heard stories about bratty teenage chins, so I'll just keep my fingers crossed. Friends and family who have already started to call him 'Monk-y' are punished by being forced to call him Mr.Monk, which is just as catchy and far more accurate to his name.

My chin, which I got from a rescue was previously named Peak. Once I met him however he was standing in his cage on his hind legs with this little expression as if saying "I'm a cute, adorable chinchilla. You can't resist paying attention to me." Then once I tried to see if he'd let me pick him up he zoomed around the cage at practically light speed leaping and jumping all over the place. The first thing that came to mind was Zidane from Final Fantasy IX. Both have tails and are little charmers, yet very tricky. (He escaped the cage at the rescue and proved to not be easily swayed by either the dust bath or a treat. I managed to catch him though.)

So Zidane it's been. Although my husband tends to like to shorten it to Z. I suppose if ever get another chin he'll probably fit into a theme also.

Holly and Ivy- The two moms were already named when we got them. We liked the names.

Zella- She was small and shy. We named her after the Zella super nova because she was so pretty. (Was named Lily)

Luna- We love her darker coloring, and the white tip tale reminds me of the moon. (Was named Daisy)

Volt- Was named Poppy when we got her. She is a pop corning freak! But I though Poppy sounded like a boys name. So we named her after an electric Volt!

i think my subconscious is finding chins named after children's cartoon movies! lol.

Rhino, most likely named after the hamster in the movie Bolt.

Guss, after the chubby cute lil mouse in Cinderella.

both came with their names.

My first two (now sadly no longer with us) were called Leroy and Stitch. im a huge Stitch and Disney fan so it just fit really well.
We decided that our theme would be experiments from the Stitch Tv series. so when Leroy died we were offered another velvet as company for Stitch. We called him Lucky (although he was almost called shoe) He was an experiment, he was born 7/7/07 which some consider Lucky. He also survived literally being scalped by a cage mate so his head is dented in. So he's pretty darn Lucky.

After that, we widened the theme to Tv and Movies. So we got Bill and Ted, named after the movie.

Then finally we ended up with Spooky. Spooky cos he's white like a ghost, and we are also big x-files fans so he's named after Mulders nickname.

My chin's name is Oliver. He's a black velvet male.
I don't have him yet, but when I do, that is what I am going to call him.

In the past few days, I have been thinking about names for my chin. One day, my dad suggested Oliver because he reminded him of a black olive :D

It grew on me, so, Oliver!

What a neat thread :D It's cool seeing how other people came up with the names for their chinnies :D

As for my boys:

Dodger- His name was a suggestion from someone on the forums, and the name fit him well, sadly my sweet Dodger has crossed the rainbow bridge.

Raider- was suggested by Stackie (Stacie) actually, As in "Little Raisin Raider" or something along that lines, and the name just fit him best!

Polaris- Polaris is named after the star, which is the North Star (and the brightest star in the constellation of Ursa Minor.) Star gazing has always been one of my favorite things. Also, the name worked well because I could use Pola as a nickname, and Pola is the name of my boyfriend's stuffed polar bear that he carried everywhere when he was little ;) Pola was a gift from Darren, for my birthday, so it just fit all around!

Rigel- Also the name of a star, found in the constellation Orion ;) The star itself is Orion's foot, which is actually what Rigel means... I still prefer to think of his name as related to astronomy vs. podiatry though XD

Pip- My new boy! Well, I've been hearing Pip for a while.. Pip was the main character in the book Great Expectations, which I had to read (begrudgingly) my freshman year of English. My friend named her pair of parakeets Pip and Estella after that book. Then another chinnie person (Carol Anne) has a chin named Pip. To be honest, I remembered my fondness for the name because I had just been watching the movie Enchanted shortly before I got Pip, and the chipmunk in that movie is named Pip! http://animatedviews.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/pip-color-model-baxter.jpg
Most of all, when I looked at him, that name is the one that clicked!

First male (became father) Chico: Brother showed up at the door one day asking me to watch him for a while. He was already named, so i wasn't going to change it.

First Female (playmate for chico, became mother) Sophie: I had also taken her in from another owner then had to give her up. She was already named as well and i wasn't going to change it. HOWEVER due to playing a a game called Star Ocean: The last hope, it was a difficult name. One of the cute girl characters was named Sophia. So for a long time i called her Sophia instead of Sophie. Took me along time to break that habit. Turned out to be a good thing i did to.

Second Male (Chico and Sophie's first son) Houdini: Definitely the most interesting name. And the most horrifying story. I wasn't familiar with chinchilla breeding habits when i introduced chico and Sophie. Made the mistake of assuming it would be similar to other animals i had had.

For months i watched them closely (once they were face to face and after that living together) Sophie NEVER let chico try to hop on her. He tried, and she would chase him away fast as can be. (got along fine tho don't get me wrong). And Sophie never showed any signs of pregnancy.

After so many months the thought of a bay slipped to the back of my head. Until one day, i had my ferrets out running for their play time, when i heard a light screaming noise from under my fridge. (bottom wasn't covered anymore so they could slip under) I ran out, hit the breaker to shut the power off. and as i approached the fridge my ferret came walking out, completely fine. Which gave me that split second moment of relief.
But then i decided, I'm already right here, i mine as well look under and check. And as i got down and tried to look under the fridge (very dark) i could just barley make out a little face in the far back. At first i assumed it was a mouse. (not the first time) But mice run, this was staying still. So i sat their for a min starring at it. Trying to focus better to see what it was. And i start to notice a chin like nose... and whiskers. And i started to wonder, could it actually be?

Then all of a sudden, he did the chin classic move. The hand across the nose motion that Sophie was so fond of. And i was sent into a complete panic.

Grabbed my ferrets and put them back in their cage immediately. And my two chins suddenly became very interested in what i was doing. (Even more then usual) Their eyes didn't blink lol.

The kit was to far back to get out. I'm physical disabled so i cant move the fridge. Its like 9pm, no-one is home. And i am completely outa my league. Fortunately i was able to get ahold of on friend. He came over and was able to move the fridge out a little. Then look like a half hour to coax him out from underneath.

Having no preparation time, i put him in a box i had. While their was only one real option, i wasn't completely sure where he came from. And i was wary about putting him in the cage with my two. But i realized that he wouldn't survive the night alone. His only chance was my two chins. So i carefully put him into the cage with mommy and daddy. They both treated him fine. And the kit ran for a drink from mommy immediately.

The next morning i took the kit and Sophie to the vet to get him checked out. Vet said he was fine. Which was amazing. I asked him how old he though the kit was. And he estimated 9 days old... what!? 0.0

That was like getting hit in the head with a brick. 9 days!? I had a kit around for 9 days and didn't notice?? (considering i watch them closely and feed them every day) I found that hard to accept. I told it to the breeder i was talking to at the time, who agreed that 9 days seemed a bit off. So as a slight help, she sent me some old pics of some of her kits showing a day by day progression. And i have to say.. he most closely resembled the kit that was 9 days old. I was completely baffled. It couldn't be...

Side note: once mommy and daddy were separated in anticipation of her second litter, counting 111 from a date assuming the kit was 9days, lead her being past 111 by about 7 days. Which makes me think maybe the kit actually wasn't 9 days old. Which seemed more logical.

But having that future information at the time, i was left with the idea that this kit was born inside my Ferret Nation cage. Most likely in the large hut that is on the top shelf of the top floor of the cage. (and i still had FN ladders at the time, didn't no they were bad). So he had to have gotten from inside that hut, to the floor many feet below him, out side the cage. Their was no pleasant way to think about that. Then survived without mommy for who knows how long... It was terrifying. I wasn't prepared and the kit almost paid for it. (I know better now)

He was also incredible at escaping his cage that first day or two. So considering his story.. Houdini seemed fitting.

Moving on from that horror story!

Since i didn't no about Houdini when he was born, i had to assume my chin was pregnant again. Since Houdini was male and staying with daddy Chico, i separated Sophie to another cage as she came close to her date.

Second and Third Female (litter of two) Sophia and Ameena. It took several weeks to name these girls. The fridge that Houdini was under was an Amana fridge. I was going to name him Amana in honner of the fridge that died saving him... But he turned out to be a guy, so Amana wasn't going to work.

Ameena however was female, and looked exactly like Houdini. 100% (aside from some equipment differences) So i thought id name here Amana in honor of her brother.

Which left me with the other kit. She was a carbon copy of her mother. And as i was talking with the breeder that help me with Houdini, she mentioned that if she looks just like her, why not Sophia? :D

Which made me laugh so hard. Remembering the character form the game, and how i used to always call her mother that because of habit. (Which i broke by this point) It seemed so fitting and so perfect. So i named here Sophia

Which leaves the last kit. Ameena. If anyone happened to notice the ending of that saying Amana instead of Ameena. ;)

In the game, their was a character Name Ameena, cute and innocent, that looked just like Sophia. Practical twins. (aside form being a few Galaxy's apart) Since i was thinking Amana for the kit, Ameena seemed very close, and also went along well with the other names. So i decided on Ameena of her :D

... Took an hour to type all that lol. Ill be surprised if anyone actually reads this wall of text lol. But its their if ya want to'

Note: I tried using spell check best i could, but my mouse likes to randomly double click and change a word without me seeing what it was. So if you come across a word thats completely outa place.. thats why.

Mine is named after a character in Disgaea 4, Fenrich. His nickname FenFen is also from the game. NERD ALERT.

Oh wow, what an interesting start to life for little Houdini! I love reading how people come up with names for their pets.

When we decided to get chins my boyfriend and I decided we would name them Stalin and Lenin if they were boys since we are both history buffs but when I found the perfect chins I decided to keep the names they came with. Silver is six so it felt a bit wrong to change his name, especially since his registered show name is Dressed In Silver. Dragon´s name fits him well too, he is going to be such a big boy and he is so bossy (Although if I were to re-name him I think I would call him Popcorn, after his favourite activity ;)

I also have five hamsters called Sonic, Tails, Amy, Bacon and Egg and a bird called Loke, for the record ;)

My girl is a rehome. Her owner called her Nibbles. I just really, really don't like cutsie names.
I was having trouble thinking of name for her. This is strange but I woke up thinking of the name Sophia. Maybe it was from a dream I was having???
