So, tomorrow's getting into the 90s temperature wise, and I thought to myself what I'd do if Kingston needed more than the AC, or the AC were to break. I really like to make things, as most of you know, so I'm going to build this little contraption as a luxury to his cage on those hot days. I'll post pics when its done, but it could be useful for those who's AC breaks just for a temporary means of getting cool. Let me know what you think.

((this is what happens when I'm bored and allowed to think))

I believe I have seen someone make these type of things before- very cool! Let us know how it turns out!

I know someone made something up like this before, but if I remember right it didn't work out well because it was too heavy.

Plan A, I would assume would be the Airconditioner...If that fails off to the ''Chinchiller-Zilla''.

I think thats a GREAT idea. Maybe you should make a few and sell them! ;)

Sounds promising. I'm moving my rabbit hutch outside this weekend or next to get it out of my bedroom. Will worry about them with the Sacramento heat even though they will be in an enclosed canvas "gazebo" under a tree. I'll have to investigate something similar to that.

Haley, what's your major in college?

I think it should be engineering...or atleast something more hands on ish. The sculptures now this. You are just burning through that creative energy. Any ideas on global warming lol?

The only thing i wonder about is the wood getting soaked from ice packs thawing out and then getting weak, unless you put tiles on the inside walls of the Chinchiller-Zilla, but I would leave the KD pine in order to make it more stable.

all the ice would melt into the pull out metal pan, but yeah, condensation would get the wood wet

-I'll have the wood protected in some way, I'll have to figure it out through experimenting.
-I'm not concerned about the weight because it'll be in the very bottom of his cage and everything will be secure so he can't take anything apart or knock it off.
-If I do make a successful one I'll post the plan, and maybe a video for you guys to use.
-And I haven't taken any engineering classes, or art yet for that matter in college but I'll have to look into some, :] at the moment I've been taking general ed and a lot of psycholohy and anthropology.

What you should do is have some part of the bottom cut out and have like a ramp where, if ice is used, the water can drain out of the cage or something. Or just use ice packs

Getting an Idea

Well, for now I couldn't really do the drawer idea, but I compromised and I'm trying something a little different.

Picture 1: Inside of frame are small tiles, I will line all sides eventually.
Picture 2: Ice packs placed on tiles.
Picture 3: Tile placed on frame. I'll be putting a higher edge on the sides to hold the tile tightly in place ((its VERY heavy to move, but precautions never hurt!))
Picture 4: Kingston tests it out.
Picture 5: Size compared to cage.

I used Elmer's Wood Glue for the frame, most people recommend using glue over nails. I've used nails on Kingston's hut, but only because he does not chew them and if he ever were to it'd be removed.

I still have to work on this but when its all done I'll post more.

Oh and for those of you who put ceramic/granite tiles in your cages, I highly recommend those 18 x 18 tiles I just put in today, 2 cover the FN width wise, and makes clean up a lot easier ^_^

**alright pics aren't uploading, I'll try again**

He's sleeping in his fleece tube right now, but it gets pretty cold. I'll put the digital thermometer on it and see what it is around it. Its about 70* in my room right now, so he may not be warm enough to wanna sit on it but its more for when he's done with playtime.

So I stuck the thermometer in there for about 5 minutes on top of the tile and it read 60* so I guess the tile is kept at about 10* below ambient temp right now.

I want some! ... I was thinking that it might get even colder if instead of a pine box you used tile sides like the same tile for the top. Then he could even lay on his side against it!

Sorry I am a bit excited about this..;. HAHA

Reminds me of an A/C I made for myself xD
Bowl of ice, with an icepack over it, and then a fan blowing the cool air around the room. Good idea in case of any sort of power outage, I could definitely see this becoming popular with some perfection.
