I totally feel your pain. I have a girl here that has had two surgeries on her teeth only to find out after the second one that it is likely to happen again and again every 3 months so I am struggling with the unthinkable as well. I know what I have to do, I just don't like it at all. She would twirl her treat and try to find a way to nibble it and then toss it aside, it was heartbreaking. She lost weight as well which was how I really knew something was wrong at first. My girl also has a couple of molars that are growing outward and the vet said that because of the way they are positioned there is no way that they can be ground the right way so that they don't impact the tongue eventually. They are at the top of her mouth and cannot be pulled without serious risk. You really need to know whether you are in the same situation with Chilli. Given what I know now I probably would not have gone through with the first surgery only to have her need another 3 months later and then be told it was hopeless...It's a lot of pain for the chinchilla, stress on both of us, not to mention the financial aspects of dental surgery...I would definitely hand feed him if you can, I doubt he feels like eating if he had his teeth trimmed but he might if the meds dull it enough. I noticed with my girl though that she was very hesitant to even try at first (I assumed it was because she was anticipating the pain she was used to). Critical Care would be my recommendation since it has everything they need in it. Best of luck with all of this, it sucks.
