You hurt Sweet Pea and Masons feelings

I was at Petco and saw the small cat/dog carriers, even saw one for only $20. I was considering it, but all 3 of my chins are chewers and those things are plastic. Since they would only be in them for a total of 4 days, would it be okay?

The four days of driving is broken up in to 2 day blocks (there and back). If we leave very very early Wed morning, we can get there by Thursday night. Going to stay in a hotel for 1 night. In the hotel room, there really isn't a place to let them out. They don't do well outside of the cages.... they poop, pee, chew, and run so I can't catch them if I let them out in a large spot :p A hotel bathroom is too yucky as well.

My dog requires about 10 times more care than my chins. She has to be taken out 5-6 times a day easily and becomes destructive when she's left alone (and has accidents). It would be much easier to leave the caged animals in the apartment and have my neighbor come over. I've actually never heard of a dog being easier than a chinchilla... what kind of dogs have you had? :p

I have little bitty dogs that each weigh between 2 1/2 and 5 pounds lol

The only thing I know to do is either leave your chins behind for the neighbor to care for, or just the dog, or the rabbit and the dog.

My dog would squish yours if she laid on them :p She's a chunker.

The dog is going with me, she can't stay behind. I'm either taking them all or leaving my caged animals.

Hehehe, It was just a suggestion....I mean you were asking for advice???
To be honest dogs drive me crazy, far to needy. But no more about that. I don't wanna take over the OP's post.

How about taking the dog and the chins, leaving the rabbit with the nieghbor since the rabbit won't have a larger cage once you get to your parents (if I read that right)?

That's one option I'm considering. The chins did well on the drive here, I think they'd do okay this time too. I'm just worried Mason will be sad being alone. He was recently very ill and stayed at the vet for 5 days. He likes the noises the chins make. I'm not sure if I'm more worried about leaving the chins or Mason. My head is spinning, too many options.

so just finished reading the thread and all i wanted to say is that they'll be ok. you'll be gone from the 23- Jan 3, right? thats about 10 days and i promise they'll be fine. i say this also because im leaving my chins for 2 weeks while i go home. im leaving mine with a friend of a friend who works at an animal clinic and has owned chins before. im defintely worried and i take him over to her house today...not looking forward to it though. but you just have to remain positive and try not to think of the worst.

i was contemplating driving home, but that'll be a 16 hour drive (not quite as far as cali though) and i didnt want to put gizmo through that, i know i'd be worrying too much about him. it was a hard decision but the way i see it, chins can stress easily and adapting to new environments would take time. then once theyre comfortable, we pack em up and take them back. i dunno, i just didnt think i could put us both through that. granted though, you may feel different and feel ok with taking them on the road trip, and props to you, i can imagine that drive ugh...

i-10 is so long and boring after san antonio. BUT as a side note, you'll be driving right though my city! im flying home to el paso tomorrow (you know...that mexican border city lol) so i'll def be sending positive travel vibes your way!

where in texas are you right now? im in galveston. our chinnies should be friends!

Oh no, I was leaning towards taking them with me until I read your message. We may be leaving early, so maybe the 21st through the 3rd or 4th. I found a cage that would be perfect for my car and it fits with the rabbit cage, so I bought it, but kept the receipt in case I need to return it.

I'm just so torn... I know my neighbor would take care of them, I'm just not sure I could be away from my kids for 2 weeks. I know we could get there a bit sooner without the cages and only the dog. We'd also have more room in the car.

The 10 is SOOOOO boring after San Antonio... you basically feel like you're driving on a treadmill, looks the same :p Plus, the truck drivers are crazy, you get passed going 75.

I'm in Corpus Christi :)

I've reached a decision. I'm leaving them here. I just tried to rig up something with my old cage and my chinchilla Shadow freaked OUT when he saw Twilight (the girl). Now my boys aren't getting along. I think it's best to keep them in their cages away from each other. My dog has also been trying to nip at the chins lately, so them all sharing a car is probably not a good idea.

Now here's the question... how much should I pay my neighbor friend? It's about 10 days, twice a day for 5-10 minutes at a time (usually 5). She literally lives 20 seconds from me.
