As a person of the media I do have to say this...
We're only reporting what's given to us. If officials weren't going crazy about it like they did at first, we wouldn't be either. We've only has a few confirmed cases in my station's viewing area... we did a network package a few times inorder to let the public know along with reopert that certain counties have seen cases. We've also reported the 36k deaths per year from regular flu and that mask don't help... and that eating pork doesn't spread the H1N1 virus (which was also changed to help people not freak out about pigs... even though Egypt is slaughtering thousands of swine due to this outbreak).
For a lot of this, we report it in order to help the health department announce to the public of what it should know... along with announcing every year to get flu vaccines. I can understand some people's blame of the media... and I personally can't control what networks or other stations show... but I don't think ALL the blame should be placed on us. People are crazy and probably would of freaked out just as much and blame the media too if we didn't report about the swine flu cases. I think this just just a larger version of the avian flu media/people freaking out because it involves the US. That's just my opinion though.
