Someone on another forum suggested the same thing. If he wasn't so uptight about everything I would do it in a heartbeat. I did bring it to his attention though. I emailed him this morning and he got back to me right away. He apologized profusely and told me that while he doesn't remember the specific circumstances, he said that the techs usually do things like that so he believes he had asked them do it. He said he is going to have a meeting with all of them about their care and not doing something they stated they did. I'm not sure if he is just passing the buck or anything, but we'll see.

I'd answer him and say, "How's about a refund?" :) Seriously, he should comp you an exam fee or something. At the very least you can almost guarantee that he won't make a mistake like this again. I'm very glad that he got back to you about it and apologized.

I'm not sure how far to push it as he already gives me massive discounts. The surgery on Drizzle's hand only ended up costing me $79.00 and that was with a surgery follow-up exam. He's also put down a few very sick/hurt chins for me for free and such.

Oh, I know. My vet does the same for me with rescues. Normally I am charged so little that I would feel bad about asking for something like that, too. :D

How about he does the c-section for free if you do have a pregnant chin and she needs one? I'm half kidding there... :p I'm sorry...that was very mean sounding.

I agree not pressing the point and risk losing your discount. Sometimes you just have to suck it up for the greater good.

Perhaps suggest that you come to a staff meeting and demonstrate the difference between males and females and show them how to do a proper hair ring check.

That's a great idea, haha. "This is a BOY chinchilla. He has a PENIS. It's right here. ...THIS is a GIRL chinchilla..."

I'd say a reduced cost/free sonogram and x-rays to check for kits would be fair, as well as an offer on your part to educate whatever techs he has that don't realize you can't check a penile sheath for hair when one doesn't exist. I realize sexing a chin can be tricky if they squirm and you've only seen a couple in your life, so helping prevent this kind of whoops in the future would keep you in "good customer" standing.

I hadn't emailed him back just yet because I wasn't sure what to ask for. I really like the idea of xrays to check for kits. How long should I wait before kits will show up on xray if she is pregnant? They had been together for about a month, but were right about 4 months I believe when I first got them. They were pretty darn tiny. Is that usually too young for pregnancy to happen? I never did see any humping, but it definitely could have missed something at night.

Personally, I wouldn't ask for anything. It's not uncommon for vet's to ask their techs to do things. The techs are pretty much responsible for everything, from lab work, xrays, and anesthesia. In my case, I was also doing minor surgeries as well.

Your vet apologized for it and said he would have a meeting. They don't normally go back on their word and I am sure he did have a talking to his staff about it because it's embarressing to him.

I think you stand to lose more here than there is to gain. If your vet already gives you a discount on services you stand to lose that. He may do something on his own the next time you bring a pet in. I personally would just chalk it up to an experience and call it a day.

On a side note, people think it is ok to radiate unborn fetus's just because they are curious to see if they are pregnant or want to know how many. Radiation doesn't go without risks. Radiation is accumulative. I can tell you first hand (a: I'm an xray tech; b: I'm also a vet tech) the techs are being exposed to radiation because for some dumb reason vets don't anesthetize patients for xrays. I wouldn't be surprised if I develop thyroid cancer by the time I'm 50. Not to mention radiation to an unborn fetus's eyes is not good. That's just my two cents though.

I don't understand how people can't sex animals, for the most part. I mean...if you just look at an animal's anatomy long enough (and not for hours, you only need a few minutes) you should be able to figure out which one has the penis pretty soon. I got Rodya and Sonya and I was told how to tell male from female by Sonya's eye defect. So I picked Rodya up a few days later and lifted him up and made sure I figured out what a boy chinchilla looked like down there. Later, when Sonya was used to me, I did the same with her. And when Ivan was born I was expecting something a little more... confusing? But the second I flipped him over, I was like, "Wow, he's a boy. How do people not know how to sex baby chins?!"
...that's just my little rant on the subject. I was on CL the other day and someone said they got a dog that they were told was a female but apparently was a male, and he got their female dog pregnant....which...ugh don't get me started. THat's what brings this up in me, lol.
