Angry at myself mainly...

So, I was showing Sora & Ansem's new owners how to do a hair ring check before they took them home today. Lo and behold.....Sora doesn't have a penis. I feel so stupid. Rick promised me he sexed everyone, especially the two standards because he put them together on the way to Jacksonville from NC. Before that they were both singles. I brought them to the vet about 2 weeks after they got here because they both had a small area of ringworm that the tinactin didn't seem to cure. My vet told me he sexed them when he put them under (just for a quick moment to check their teeth since we were already there) and did hair ring checks, so I didn't feel the need to when they got back to my house. Apparently he didn't actually do what he told me he did.
They were so skittish that they literally cried when they were being held, so I left them alone for awhile to let them adjust further. I never even thought to check since two other people said they had.

I can't believe I trusted everyone else without checking myself. I always check. Why didn't I check the one time it mattered? I don't know. I feel bad for the family who was going to adopt them today as they now couldn't. I offered them Ansem, but they didn't want to take the one without the other. I told them I could not adopt out a male/female pair.

I plan on adopting them out separately, though Sora is now on pregnancy watch for the next 111 days. She is larger than Ansem, but that could be just because she is a larger chin. She is "bigger" in the belly though than Ansem, which concerns me more than a little. They have been separated since I found out.

UGH. I am so mad at myself.

Uggg... I AM SO SORRY! Don't worry, it'll be alright. She may not be pregnant at all. Just keep her well fed and by herself the next four months. :(

You have my number, right? If you have any problems, you are always welcome to call for help. I just hope you don't have to go through the whole babies thing. (I really get nervous when they have their little ones...)

Actually I don't have your #. Can you PM me with it?

She may not be pregnant, or at least I'm hoping not. I'm hoping they are still a bit too young even be thinking about humping. I never saw any humping, at all, so that never tipped me off. If I had I would have taken them out and checked them in a heartbeat. Poor babies too. They have been crying for each other and it breaks my heart. If I would have known I would have separated them right from the start, which wouldn't have caused them to be so bonded.

I am seriously considering finding a new vet. As much as I love him, and as knowledgeable he is, he straight up lied to me about care he gave to my rescues. That doesn't sit well with me.

that really stinks, more so because the vet said they did a hair ring check!

ok........now i need to go check Pichu & Midnite! Well I saw Midnite grooming himself so I know he is a boy.......but now I need to make sure Pichu is. I will be so upset because they are besties.

Don't blame yourself accidents happen. Just keep an eye on her hopefully she is not pregnant but is she is you will be fine.

But how can you do a hair ring check if there is no penis? He had to have not done it at all (or even looked down there) and told me different. That's what annoys me.

I'm so sorry that this happened. Wee Companions has also learned the hard way to never take anybody's word on sex of animals. Always check for yourself.

What about getting him neutered so they can go together?

I had thought about it, but I am going to have to separate them anyway while he still has little sperm guys in his system. Isn't it a month afterward before you can put them back together?

They haven't been together too long, do you think they'll pine for each other to the point where it will be a problem?

Not sure. I have them separated now and I am going to see how they do.

Crysta, I'm so sorry to hear this.
We all make mistakes, that's part of being human. I would try to accept it and learn from it. I know how frustrating it is when you rely on someone's expertise opinion and do not even think about double checking, and then something goes wrong....:hug2:

I'm so sorry for the vet's error/incompetence; BUMMER!!!

I, too, vote for neutering. If it's done by an experienced Exotics vet, it's not too difficult. And, since they are bonded, they will be able to stay together.

I don't think that you'll have to worry about waiting until the sperm have all cleared -- Mr. Whiskers could do little more than lie around in his cuddle cup feeling sorry for himself after I had him and Baby neutered; The Snuggler also took it really easy for a while, too, when it was his turn. Not a whole lot of humping when that area is sooo tender!!!

Definitely look for a new experienced Exotic vet...good luck!!!

Males should always be kept away from females for 3 to 4 weeks post neuter in order to make sure there is no viable sperm left.

This is a really dangerous perspective to be sharing. When Chill was neutered, he acted like nothing had happened. Was bouncing everywhere.

The recommendation here is to keep them separate for 6 weeks post castration to be on the safe side.

The bottom line to all this (regardless of the vet issue) is the Arlington Rescue was done in a hurry & these chins were mis-sexed - it is an easy mistake but it should not have happened TBH. The chins should have been double checked before loading them into the crates for transporting espcially if they were being paired up.

I guess the moral of this thread is anyone who has received a chin from the Arlington rescue should double check the sex of any chins they have received.

Crysta - good luck with the female - fingers crossed she is not pregnant.

Here's to hoping Sora isn't pregnant. That really sucks, but don't be so hard on yourself. Stuff happens.

Bummer about the mis-sexing. And bummer your vet wasn't as awesome as you thought. Perhaps you should take a chin in and watch them do a hairring check personally to see if they even know how to do one in the first place! If you need anything for those potentially future babies, just let me know. I am just a phone call away.

Don't beat yourself up, it is reasonable that you didn't check given what you were told and the fact that they were rescues you wanted to let have some peace. A hard lesson learned but hopefully others can learn that you do need to sex your animals yourself.

Meanie, I believe you are correct in this case and point well taken.

In my case I had 2 males, so the natural sex drive/attraction was not in play. I stand corrected, since this is a M/F pair and agree with your advice!!!
