I am looking to add another chinchilla to my home and I emailed someone off cragislist who is looking to rehome their young chinchilla. She said that the chinchilla's color was silver. I tried to google what that would look like but all I got was a lot of pictures of cats. I asked her to send me a picture and she said she would but in the mean time could someone please tell me what a silver chinchilla would loook like or if she is just mistaken another color. I am newer to chinchillas and not well versed in fur colors yet. I am not sure if I posted this in the correct spot. I apologize if I did not.

People sometimes refer to mosaics as 'silver' or it could be a lighter standard grey as well but I doubt it's a true silver b/c they're not all that common. When you get the pic post it so we can take a look.

Addictedtochins by the looks of the pic's he was misclassified as a true silver will have no light or dark spots and will be a uniform silver over the entire top of the animal. Any white with spots or a color variation and they are a mosaic.

One of my previous rescues was considered a "Silver". Unfortunately I don't have any really good pictures that show her color, but here is a few that I do have.

She had no light or dark spots, just the silver color.

Oh, thank you.

Thanks for all the info. I will post a pic as soon as she sends it to me.

Here is a picture of him. So what do you think a mosaic or a silver?

He looks like an adorable little mosaic. I have a mosaic boy and his colour keeps changing. He was much darker when he was younger but he's gotten much lighter over the years. So are you getting him then?

I have not decided if I am going to get him or not. I am definitely going to go see him. I am really afraid to introduce him to my boy. I have never done it before and despite reading all the wonderful advice on here I just dont want to do anything wrong.

How old is he and how old is your current chin? The chin in the pics you posted looks fairly young which could be an advantage. Also, if you get any new chin you really should do a four week quarantine before you even think about introductions and then if you choose to do the slower route such as moving their cages closer together over a period of time then there's another few weeks or more to add on. Or you could leave them side by side for months if you felt like it; no real hurry imo. If you're going to go and check this guy out, do make sure you have a good look at his bits to see if he is in fact a he.

If you are new to chinchillas, if you get this little guy you may want to post pictures of his genitals. It can be really hard to tell boys from girls if you are not familiar with them. Many times chins are mis-sexed. It would be something you definitely would want to make sure of before they are cage-mates.

He's adorable -- and irresistable!!! I would get him with the knowledge they MAY have to be kept separate if they don't eventually get along. But I have had good luck with intros and they might just do fine together. But he really is a cutie! How old is your other boy, what is his personality like, and how old is this one?
