Besides the obvious pros and cons of having fleece over shavings, do you often think that the chins might prefer shavings because it allows them to "dig" or "burrow"? I'm currently using shavings right now, and I plan on changing to fleece, but I'm possibly thinking about keeping maybe half a level, or at least a section of the cage where if my chin wants to, he can go over there and dig and burrow. It seems Po really enjoys this, and I worry that switching over to fleece completely will give him one less activity to engage in.

I think to some extent it may depend on the chin. With the exception of a chin or two, my chins don't like their fleece hammocks, houses, and so on, and tear them up. But I always see them digging in their shavings. So I think mine probably wouldn't be thrilled about the fleece and about having their shavings taken away. But then I see pictures of people's chins who are cuddled up in a fleece bed or pillow or something... and maybe those chins wouldn't mind. If you think your chin likes a bit of shavings to dig in, then I'd leave a bit of shavings to dig in. If most of the cage is fleece, a bit won't be too problematic to clean up.

i agree with the above. i think you might need to experiment to find out which your chinchilla prefers. i think you should leave a section with the shavings and watch to see what he likes more. also make sure your not using pine or cedar shavings. kiln pine is fine.
