Last night I found Sam lethargic and uncoordinated, I held him and cuddled with him for about an hour or so and set him up a cage so that I would take him to the vet today. It was only a few hours before he was gone. He never had any symptoms of anything, he was fine until last night. I told him yesterday morning that I would let him out for a playtime and a cuddle that night. He was fine.

Sam I miss you, you've never let me down.

He would have been six this summer.

Thanks. He was the one chin who was always there, he always let me snuggle with him, no matter what, he never let me down. Ever.

Are you having a necropsy done? You have had an abnormal amount of chin deaths there. I hope you postpone breeding or accquiring any more chins until you find out what is hurting your herd.

No, no necropsy. I couldn't do it. I just couldn't stand to have it done. I'm done breeding. Although Sam's death isn't breeding related, I can't do it. And I've actually only had two deaths, Anza's was entirely unpreventable. And Sam's was unknown. Maybe a few years down the road, not now though.

I'm very sorry. Hopefully your break in breeding will let you recover emotionally from your losses quicker.

In the future, you have to bring yourself to do a necropsy when its sudden death, its only fair to the rest of your chinchillas in case its something contageous or some issue with husbandry.

I wanted one at first. But the pictures just kept coming to my mind of him getting cut open and he was Esperanza's mate and I just needed him to be at peace. I know I should have but I just, couldn't.

I would be concered you lost esperanza suddenly as well didn't you? RIP sampson. Hopefully now you really will wait on breeding

Esperanza's causeof death was known though. She had her spay and just didn't bounce back went in to stasis and despite my work to save her she didn't make it.
