I just purchased toys, rose hips and various other treats from a seller on this website. I was just curious as to how I'm supposed to cut the rose hips up to give them to my chin, Fonzie. They look like they may have seeds in them. Can he eat the seeds? I've never heard of rose hips before this website so I know nothing about them lol.

Thanks for any and all advice :))

you can give your chin a whole rosehip. they do have seeds inside with the prickly stuff but most chins do not seem to mind.

if you dont want to give them a whole one you can put it in a plastic baggies and just crush it and give your chin the pieces.

personally i give my guys the crushed rose hips. it gets mixed with some other items so it is just easier for me.

I'm "cough" evil. I give them whole, and just walk around the room with my jar of treats. After a couple shakes of the can, they all know what time it is! All are pressed against the front of the cage begging! Just watch those fingers! Some can get a bit to eager for those rose hips!

Thanks mishellyshel & Twilight Chinchillas I just broke them up with a hammer and let him pick a piece from the container. He loves them! He's starting to learn that when i shake the container that its treat time (I use to have other treats in the container). Soo cute!!

My chins love the crushed rosehips but every once in awhile I give them whole ones just to see their faces! They dont like the fuzzy centers so they wipe their tongues off with their hands, sooooo adorable!

i give Rhino whole rosehips. while eating, he maneuvers the seeds out of his mouth and drops them on the cage floor. then he must eat the seeds later because i never seem to see them afterward.

Thanks Amy555 & ChinnyMom :)) I didn't crush all of the rose hips that I bought so maybe I will give him a whole piece in a couple of days and see how he likes it. He seems to have picked out the seeds as well. I sweep the ramps and ledges of his cage daily, so I will have to watch and see if they disappear! Thanks so much for all of the advice :))

Mine also love them whole. Rose hips are a safer treat than most because it is difficult to overfeed them, excess vit. C passes through the urine and the rest is fiber. I only ever give one at a time though.

Escapees that get into my container eat between three and six. The leave individual piles of seeds as evidence. The funny thing is that they will get into the container and carry them various places to eat them - then go back to the container for another.

You can also purchase cut and sifted rosehips but the whole rosehips tend to be cheaper. You can also feed rose buds as well.

Yes, ours LOVE rose buds too! I need to find these in bulk, they are a big hit at our house.

Wow rose buds? What an odd sort of treat! If anybody knows where I could buy some of these, it would be greatly appreciated. I haven't seen them on any of the sites linked in signatures, but I may have missed them. Thanks!

Christine,

I should have red and pink rosebuds here on Monday!!! They have been delayed due to the weather.

My chinnies all loved rose hips for a while now they tend to snub them. Every now and then I'll get them to take a one.

Rose buds are much loved here. My chinnies have red rose buds and purple rose buds. Sometimes even pink. I assume they each taste different to them (not to me), because the purple is often snubbed but when offered a red right after they take it and run!

I haven't tried rose hips yet, but I may have to! I'm almost out of rose buds. (Boy do they love those!)

My first chin did not like them at all. However, my second one does silly dances if he so much as catches a whiff of them. It's like he can hardly contain himself. It's his fav treat and certainly better than feeding sun flower seeds or other unhealthy treats.

I buy the already crushed ones so I don't see any seeds in there.
