I am considering switching to manna pro sho, its the one in the purple bag right?

I have used mazuri for years, but due to a large price jump and the fact that none of the local stores carry it, the one that will is over an hour away, and half the time they wont even keep it in stock. UGH! I am tired of constantly calling them and asking them if its in stock, only to find out they forgot to order it again...

A local store here said they can order 50 pound bags of manna pro sho for around 16 bucks. Is that close to what others pay? I could have swore that I read somewhere that mazuri and manna pro sho are very similar, is that correct?

Thanks for the input.
Heather

Yes, the Sho has purple letters and the bottom of the bag is purple. I have been feeding Manna Pro Sho for a few years now and am pretty happy with it. It isn't too expensive (~$14 for a 50 lb. bag here in CA) and my chins are very healthy and have beautiful coats.

Manna Pro Sho is a 16% protein formula, lower than Mazuri's 20%? protein level. It has added probiotics and enzymes and between 18 and 23% fiber which is important to the chinchilla and their G.I. health. Mazuri has less then 18% fiber.

The cons of Manna Pro Sho for me are:
  • sometimes I will get a batch that has crumbly pellets and this produces a lot of powdery fines and waste
  • I have to drive out about 40 minutes away to get it...

Manna Pro sho is a much better feed than mazuri.I have been feeding it for 3 years and have had great success with it.

When I switched, Mazuri was $15 for 25# and Manna Pro Show was $12 for 50# - even driving 40 miles for a food that put about 15% weight on the herd for 1/2 the price was well worth it!

I switched from Mazuri to Oxbow when I first got my girls. They weren't gaining weight on Oxbow so I did the transition to Manna Pro Sho. They LOVE the stuff and it is way cheaper than Oxbow. They have been gaining weight and their coats are beautiful.:)

I forgot to list my pros in a pretty list!
  • fairly inexpensive at $14/bag
  • high fiber and added probiotics make it easily digested and helps maintain good gut health
  • contains quality ingredients and supplements
  • just enough protein to support pregnant or lactating females and growing kits but not too high for adult chins
  • has a 3.5% fat content which contributes to nice healthy coats
  • the chins eat it!

I just switched to Manna Pro Sho at the beginning of August, from Mazuri.

I was paid $16 for a 25lb bag of Mazuri and now I'm pay ~ $14 for a 50lb bag of MPS.

My chins have all gained a bit of weight since being switched and they seem to like it more as well

Same, my herd is on MPS & everyone seems to do much better on this feed than anything else i've tried. Coats look good, weight gained, & healthy animals & offspring.

My Tractor Supply store doesn't carry it... although I wish they would as TS is only a 10 minute drive as opposed to the 40 minutes I currently drive to get it!

I use MPS and love it... I think my only complaint is that it ONLY comes in 50lb bags... and I only have 2 chins :/ I try to share, but still always seem to have more than my girls will really eat before it goes to waste.

I have to special order MPS from Tractor Supply 45 min away because they only carry Manna Pro Gro, but its no problem special ordering if I give them a week's notice (unless something drastic has changed in the past month). Its about $16 a bag, and I have no complaints about how the chins like it or how they look since switching.

You can also look for a Nutrena dealer near you.

MPS is okay, My chins had been on it for the last year, but I recently switched to a custom milled feed. They did pretty well, but I often seen inconsistencies and didn't care much for that.

I'm concerned about the fat content. Isn't that a bit high for chins?

Manna Pro Sho only has a 3.5% fat content. Oxbow is at 2.5% and Mazuri is at 3.0%, so only a difference of 0.5 - 1.0%. It also has the same 3.5% fat percentage as PANR which many other chin owners, breeders and ranchers currently use.

In the last three years I've been on this food, I have not had any issues with overweight chins. They grow well, are at healthy stable weights, and have beautiful coats... and I have over 40 chins ranging in age from newborn kits to 10 years.

Thanks for the reply Sumiko.
I feel better now knowing that the fat content is not notably higher than other chin pellets.
